max advance

What is the consensus on max advance for good starting point on a 1600 race motor -- 12:1 ross pistons high lift cams. 110 leaded race fuel.
I put it at 32 degrees, but someone else is telling me 28 degrees.

Insight? Comments?

If you don't get the answer you need here, you may want to post on the AlfaRace Yahoo group. Lot's of experience with race engines there. I can't speak specifically to a 1600, but on a 2L engine with well-designed pistons, I have always needed at least 35 degrees. Of course, the timing is best set on the dyno. I'd be surprised if you weren't giving up significant power at 28 degrees.

max advance

Sounds right to me.

We were running a wide band O2 sensor just to check mixture.

You are right though. It's going on the dyno. P
