engine management diagnostic tool
can anybody tell me what this item is
part no mpx97
it looks like a engine management or computer
has genuine alfa ,fiat lancia on front
12 settings and 6 plugs
the back has a legend airbag ,abs etc 1-12
and batt+ earth etc 1-6
and a few unusuall socket plugs
should i keep it for one day when i get an efi alfa?
is it any good without a manual?

The green plug is an OBD II connector, which means it's for '96-on cars (or maybe '97, hence the 97 in the name). I would guess the other connector is for the airbag system.
Since we never got the OBD II Alfas in the US your best bet is to hope someone from Europe chimes in with more info.

but back to basics, what does obd II stand for?
and what does this unit do?
im still using distributor points and emulsion tubes out here!

It's the computer that reads, tunes and spits out trouble codes for all the spiffy stuff that fuel injection incorporated with emissions systems and electronic ignitions need to stay happy and compliant.
The tester you're looking at is the human interface tool that lets you read, find, diagnose and clear error codes produced by the onboard computer.

the three pin plug on the right is, I believe, a Lancia pre-OBD2 connector (i have seen it used for magneti-marelli IAW ECUs, for eg the Delta integrale.) I'm not sure what the bit to the right of it does though.
Similar ECUs are found in Fiat Coupes, and, I think, on one Ducatti bike(?)
