T.S. purchase sources?

Hello there-

I am new to this forum but not new to Alfas. I am thinking of converting my 69 GTV to Twin Spark power. I am in California and am wondering where to find one of those motors? I am also interested in theTurbo version. Any info would be great.

Alex

Welome Alex. I know of two definite sources for a model 75 TS engine.

1. David Gabriele from Italy sells these on eBay usually in pairs.
2. EB Spares in the UK can sell them also I believe.

I suggest taking a browse at the links below then hitting us with some questions.

The 2.0 4 cyl engine is really rare, most 2.0turbos are v6.

Well, friends have been calling me that for ages since the days i owned a Charger.
I have also used it as a nick on internet for too many years to change it now...

And you shouldn't say anything seeing how you own a Barracuda :P

I think what mopar means to say is that the 4 cyl, 2-L turbo is rare. Also, it's not a TS. Further, it would be a major pain to fit into a GTV because of the intercooler, not impossible, just a heck of a lot of fabrication work. But if you do it, I'd sure love to see it!

Time & Transport cost

Hi Alex,

Most folks that do this buy an old engine that has not been rebuilt, so the cost of the engine core itself is not that high. That's good news, but in the US the shipping costs then become a significant part of the purchase. And shipping these can take a while (figure 2 months best case from Italy.)

Remember that since you are buying something that's come out of a car that's been scrapped, it's highly variable what the condition will be when it arrives. I bought two from Gabrielle David (aka alfa1750) on e-bay. He was very responsive and the engines came with all the accessories that he promises -- wiring harness, ECU, starter, coils, etc. (even the power steering pump, but I don't think I'll put power steering in my GTjr. )

In my case it took forever for them to arrive though – over 4 months! -- because of August holidays in Italy and delays in US customs. Note that there are handling charges on the US side that push the shipping costs above the basic rate from Italy. (About $200 more in my case.) And then there’s customs – this kind of importation falls a bit outside of what they are used to, so the questions you get asked seem to vary case-by-case. So, if you go this route, expect it to cost about $900 ~ $1,000 per core and take at least 2 months – not bad (for something exotic) if you’ll do the rebuilding yourself and aren’t in a hurry. I haven’t done the rebuilding (or even torn them down) yet, but I expect the parts costs to be comparable to a typical 2L rebuild (i.e. the parts cost will outweigh what you've spent on the core.)

Other's who have done this report that the parts are fairly easy to find -- in fact some are interchangable with the older 2L parts.

Good luck! (and post your experiences here!)

great...

great info blu58.
are there any specific parts that are particularly difficult to replace in a rebuild? i've seen some lists of parts that can be used from a 2.0ltr., but
what might be a difficult find if needed?

john

Speaking of Turbos. I just watched an episode of Two Guys Garage on Speed where they installed a Turbo on a Camaro. What was unique on this Turbo was that it replaced the rear muffler on the car. Pipes ran from the rear to the front of the car for the air intake and since the car had a fake dual exhaust, one of the tail pipe ports was used as the air intake with a cone filter. They said that no intercooling was needed as the length of the air intake cooled the air charge. Had its own oiling system with an electrical oil pump. Before install hp was 269 on the car. After hp was over 400!! without modifying anything else.

Check this out

Thanks for the great info. I am still going to look about for a turbo 4cyl. I'll try and contact Gabrielle David and see if he knows where to get one. Do you have any contact info? I would do the rebuild myself and since the car needs to go to the body shop first I have lots of time. As for fitting the turbo motor under the hood of a GTV I am willing to take on the fabrication job but I need the motor first. I also am willing to look into turboing a NA twin spark and just using an after market ecu. Then it becomes about getting a exhaust maifold. Ideas?
