Serious, I have always thought that one of the nice things about headers is how they look all custom and high tech with nice neat welds. That's why I was a bit nonplussed about your plans to wrap them. But these bring in a whole new mode. They just look all "this engine is way too much for a normal car so extreme measures had to be taken." "Show respect or else!"

Yeah!

Ain't that the TRUTH!!! Yeah, every header wrap I ever saw, always had that awful yellow tinge to them. So when it came time to wrap the DEMON'S headers, they just HAD to be black.

DEMON Interior Update!!

During this downtime, I've turned my attention to upgrading the interior. With all the work that has gone into the exterior, something was still lacking in the interior. But what?

Yes, I have the totally redone seats, door panels, custom sound, as well as the custom mid and lower console. But something was missing. Then I knew it and ordered these bad boys up today!!!

Auto Meter's Nexus line had EXACTLY what I was looking for to transform/update the interior. I ordered a speedometer, tach, oil temp, oil pressure, water temp, fuel level, volt and an air/fuel wideband gauge. As well as the module to manage them all.

I'll be dumping the entire stock Alfa gauges in favor of this awesome Nexus series!! Super accurate 270 degrees sweep movement, choice of color illuminations, record runs and download, full gauge alert warnings, programmable initialization and shut down sequences, remote operation...the works!!

I met with my interior guy, Frank tonight to discuss the install. I suggested we fab a black leather backed panel for the main pod to house the speedo, tach, oil pressure and water temp gauges. Then in the 3 useless air vents over the head unit, I'll have the fuel level, volt and oil temp. Lastly, on the lower center console panel, just in front of the e-brake handle, will be the air/fuel wideband gauge.

Check them out here: Auto Meter - Nexus

Wrap On. Wrap Off.

Had a chance to go by the shop with a good friend of mine that was in town and he wanted to see the DEMON in person. I've been emailing him the progress shots from the beginning and he delivered some...not so good news to me today.

All was good until I showed him the headers. There are several crucial things wrong with the wrap - directly and indirectly. For one, he said that with the headers having the black ceramic coating, they require a heat cycling/brake in period for the coating to "set-in". This cannot happen properly with the headers wrapped. The heat-cool set-up must happen without heat trapping.

Secondly, I over wrapped the headers way too much. Not good. Inconsistent and excessive overlapping translates into various hot-spots all over the headers. Which in turn, will cause warping of the headers because of too much heat retention. I was only supposed to wrap with a 1/4 inch overlap. At least 90% of my wrapping reached the 1 1/2" - 1 3/4" overlap mark on the 2" width wrap.

Lastly, unless I was driving the DEMON quite frequently, the wraps will harbor moisture and speed up the deterioration process of the steel. This is relevant to me cause the DEMON won't see much road time. Once a week if at all for a few hours during our short summer season. After that, it'll be stored for at least 6 months as I do travel in the winter months.

Suffice to say, with a tear in my eye, I clipped off the SS wires and unwrapped the headers this afternoon. Never to wrap them again. Just as I said I'd never. I would of taken a couple shots. But I was just too broken up. Sniff. Sniff.

Then he suggested I add a fan equipped oil cooler to keep the temps down. Yeah, thanks Danny. Bastard!!

Well, not the best day but I rather hear this info now BEFORE the 3.7 returns to the bay. I learned quite a bit today about other aspects of the DEMON and I'm grateful for Danny's input. Even if it's something I don't want to hear. Respect bro!

Aside from all that, he loved the hood, fenders, bumpers, doors and rear end narrowing/rim concepts. Once I dial in the tuning and set-up the suspension, he said this thing will be one serious street-burner!!!

Once a week???? Come on, you've got to be kidding. I understand about winter in the great white north and all, but during the summer? Once a week?! No way. I drive my Ferrari nearly every day now. I am probably going sell or give away my Alfas. What's the point? I walk into the garage and all I see is the Mondial.

We'll see if you can stick to "once a week"

SF,

The Autometer gauges are nicer, but I'm still trying to work out how you'd position them all in the S4 monopod & console.

It's probably too late now, but I could really see the Stack Multi-Function displays looking really good in the monopod - just the large tacho and the LCD displays, and all of the other options too (like shift light, etc.).

Stack Motorsport Products

All the best,

Dino

If one was to go with the Stack Motorsport stuff, piss on the multifunction stuff jammed in the monopod and go with *this puppy instead

i cant imagine the cost on that stack stuff..let alone the wheel

imo on a "street" car where you have to turn the wheel more that 180 deg's that dash would get in the way the first time you tryed to park the car

Hey Buddy! Not to perpetuate your pain here (because I know that you spent hours getting it just "right" and your hands must have been raw by the end of it all), but maybe there's a small FYI lesson in this for all of us!

It sure caught me by surprise when I had this come-back on one set of my headers! So, take a guess what happened here:

Just as a further matter of interest (and for the sake of any doubters), check it out! It was just amazing how that ONE primary of the ONE header - and the ONLY section of steel that was header-wrapped on this ceramic-coated set - was the ONLY section of steel effected in some weird fashion! (The guy was trying to protect something right there in close proximity.

it blistered at one point and cracked and the ceramic coating ad steel was peeling off (more like flaking off) in that one section! You can still see the check-pattern of the fabric where it had burned/melted it's presence into the primary! Brad at Performance Coatings also confirmed that this is a natural side-effect of wrapping ceramic coated headers!

This was a GTV6 and on the guy's drive up last here to the Northwest, the header started leaking and it got outer and louder as he approached Seattle! The that one primary was entirely swollen in that one section and cracked (the weld was a temporary fix to get him home with a fresh set of headers...)

Lemme see if I have this straight. If your headers have ceramic coating, don't wrap. If your headers are not coated, then wrapping is OK - helpful to reduce temps and will not harm the metal? Is that true, or is wrapping a black hole of non-function? In other words, an either/or: you may coat your headers or wrap them to reduce heat output, but don't do both. Correct?

If so, the question is standing there with a sign, all going "Me!" "Me!" "What about me!" Which is more effective at reducing header caused engine compartment heat damage to the surrounding components? Coating or Wrapping?

JJ? Anyone else? Inquiring minds want to know.
