Alfetta 2000cc engine into a GTV.

It looks like I might not get the 1600cc to put my GTV, but I was offered a 2000cc engine out of an Alfetta. It's a nice engine.. high compression pistons, etc, but it needs to be rebuilt. My main concern with this is that it's out of an Alfetta, so it doesn't have the holes necessary to bolt on the transmission, since the Alfetta's transmission is in the rear. Is it as simple as drilling the holes, or is there more to it? Anything else I should be worried about?

Also, I would still like to run Weber carbs (assuming I can find them at a semi-affordable price..) What modifications would I need to make to the 2000cc to run carbs on it?

The trans will bolt right up although I don't know if the stud lengths are the same. Easily changed if they're not. A deep sump batwing oilpan will need to be fitted as well. Of concern would be the crankshaft. Later Alfetta cranks are not drilled for the 105/115 trans input shaft. But the crank can be drilled and fitted with the proper bushing. If using the original mechanical clutch trans, you'll also need a 2l flywheel machined to accept a 1600 ring gear and an adapter release bearing from Centerline. Another option is to use a hydraulic clutch trans (or correct hydraulic bellhousing fitted to your current trans) but you'd have to add a clutch master cylinder, reservoir and associated plumbing.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Would it make more sense to try to find a 1600?

Edit: I'm not too concerned about performance/etc, I don't plan on racing the car. I'm trying to keep the restoration cost to a minimum though.

The engine in my GTV is from an Alfetta. If I remember correctly, it cost me about $40 to have the crank drilled about 10 years ago. I think he complained that it was a bugger of a job...

Regards,
Lawrence

A 1600 is likely rare as rocking horse poop ! They are here in Oz.

Some Alfetta engine have the pilot holed crankshaft so find out exactly what you are looking for (I don't have a pic sorry) then check all the engines until you find one with the correct crank.

If you are willing to rebuild the engine anyway, then just get the crank machined. 2000 cranks were nitrided I believe which m,eans they are HARD and quite resistant to machining.

I'd be more inclined to find a used, carbed, 1750 which doesn't require an immediate rebuild.

My Duetto had a 1.8 Alfetta engine installed by PO, replete with the Alfettas DellOrtos. Of course you guys in the US don't have such a wealth of used carby Alfetta engines lying about, ad postage would be a killer.

Depends on your definition of restoration. Not knowing the condition of the car, a decent respray with a bit of bodywork, interior and a mechanical going over will be in the five digit range anyway (unless you're doing some or all of it yourself) so the additional cost of a 2l conversion would be insignificant. If the car ever comes up for sale in the future, there will be some buyers who will walk (maybe run) away if it has a non-stock 2l or offer less because it's a non-original vehicle. OTOH, others will welcome it as a mod that they would have done themselves.

Personally, I think original stepnoses are getting a bit rare what with losses from time and conversions and such. Ironically, the short term cost of a non-original restoration may be less than the cost of a restoration to original.

better yet, find a guy who HAS converted to 2.0 and has a 1750 or so lying around gathering dust in the workshop.
Shame transport is such a killer, I got plenty of weary 1600 lying around, would sell complete, tired engine , inc flywheel, carbs etc for 200 Euro.
or complete 2.0 with flywheel (hard to get) foor 450,-
