Keven,

For what it's worth, the stock S2000 filler is on the drivers side of the car. Does this make a difference? It looks like you've made a lot of modifications to the tank.

Yep, the fuel tank is turned around or reversed. I don't think
that it will cause any problems, as the there is a pan that
acts as a baffle for cornering, and accelerating to prevent
fuel starvation. I think it should work ok in any direction.
I am worried about filling the tank, as the feed line/hose
from the cap will be at very slight angle.

The cancer is bad, but some metal fab, and welding should
clean in all up nicely. I think that most GTV's have this problem,
as the gasket holds water against the metal lip, and slowly
rots it away. I am wondering if using some POR on these
areas will cure any future problems there.

The cap costs $80, and the funnel $70 all from:

Keven,

Have you had a look at race shop fuel tanks, ie. the safety plastic ones with the foam inside?

They might have a rectangle cube shaped one that will fit between the rear shock towers much neater than the Honda one ... just a thought . Then you would maintain a lot more boot space.

have to agree..id be happyer running a fuel cell personaly

a well primed(epoxy/rustproof primer) and then a good top coat at the same time you paint the car "should" prevent any of that from ever happening....

dont worry to much about the angle of the fuel inlet..thats why the pumps have a curved nozzle ..ive seen some VERY curved fill necks...you should see the neck on my 58 ford

All parts of the filler neck and tank must be grounded, static electricity develops when you pour gas and unless there is ground it can ignite.

And the filler hose from the pump has an internal ground wire. There have have been a number of fires after someone replace the special pump hose with ungrounded hose.

I wouldn't go with a plastic tank on a street car as they are hard to seal completely and the trunk will end up filling with gas fumes... a little dangerous also. Another problem with foam instead of baffles is that they absorb alot of gas, my friend had a plastic 11 gal cell in the back of his car for a few weeks (the old tank had rusted out) and he didn't even have 8 gallons of usable gas. But there are some nice steel fuel cells out there, in about every shape and size.

Foam absorbs hardly any fuel, infact I would say it's not noticeable ... my last race car had a plastic foam filled tank ... brilliant IMO. Weird to fill up because you could not see the fuel, just the blue foam ... until all of a sudden it was there. Also this plastic tank had a bolted on fuel gap thingie, thus it would be easy to make something that bolted on exactly the same way.

Maybe the foam was different to your friends, but IMO ALL fuel tanks should have this foam installed.

The only reason passenger cars use baffles and metal tanks is cost ... and they simply don't care enough about their customers. That is why many new cars are still made with the petrol tank hanging out in the boot floor just waiting for that rear ender.

yeah, it wasn't very expansive, plus he was using a top mount in tank pump which may have made a difference

The reason all fuel cells have a 5 year life is because the foam deteriorates. I'm not sure people would love to change their tanks every five years.
Almost all new cars have their tank in front of the rear axle (under the rear seat), can you give me an example of something that has it under the boot?

I'm reasonably sure the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodores sold in Australia have the fuel tank mounted in the boot still ...

But agree infront of the rear axle is the best place (like an Alfa Sud).
