81 spider won't start when warm

car starts great when cold and will usually start fine when hot. But sometimes it will crank normal but will not fire. If I push start it, it will fire up within about 3 ft or 3 revolutions of the motor cranking. I thought it was a dead cell and replaced the battery but it is still doing it. another problem occurred yesterday on the way home from a car show about 35 miles away. It started missing and chugging real bad. could this be a fuel pump or filter problem, or could it be related to the starting problem. any help is appreciated thanks Craig

Have you checked for voltage at the coil, if it is correct, then check that you have HT voltage (ie coil to distributor) .Could also be the common ALFA electrical ----- GROUNDS/EARTHS. Clean and check. If these are OK, then start checking the fuel system, just REMEMBER, one step at a time, it is a only a system of analysis. Hope this helps, Dave.

Craig,

I have had the same problem in the past. I called my car the round tripper, because you never wanted to shut it down somewhere for fear that it would not start until the engine was stone cold again. I went ahead and did a service of my Spica fuel injection and it seemed to have fixed the problem. I'm not sure if that is what you have, but if it is that would be as good a place as any to start. I know mine was pretty badly neglected. Hope this helps.
