Ignition switch repair (79 Spider)

I had an over zealous locksmith take the back off my ignition switch when trying to make a key. I am now faced with trying to put it back together. The back of the switch where the wires connect appear to be spring loaded.

Has anyone tried to reassemble one of these? I could buy a new one but this one has only been on the car a few years.

:2cents:

If he took it apart, why is it your issue to put back together?

If he can't do it, then he's the one that needs to replace it for you. (unless of course you told him he could take it apart, in which case all bets are off)

I've got one in pieces myself, but it was my own doing on a used up one to see what it consisted of.

27,000,000 springs and detents later, and it's sitting in a ziplock baggie waiting for me to have a couple weeks free time to figure out how to reassemble it

I had to hire the locksmith because we were in the process of moving from Colorado to NC. The keys to the Spider were in FL and the Alfa was in Colorado. I had to hire a locksmith in CO to make keys for my cars. Now that I have the car and the keys in NC I can start to put it back together.

The switch is in two main pieces. The electrical part and the lock part.

Well I got it. It was one of those Alfa - Zen solutions. I had to line up the two shafts but the trick came with this spring loaded lever thing that has to line up with some notches on the electric part. Anyway, I was playing around with a paper clip and discovered a tiny hole that would allow me to take the spring tension off the lever. Once I did that it went right together.

Kinda like using a clip to hold back alternator regulator brushes til you get it jammed back in then.

Sweet.
