Thank's for the correction. You're right, now that I think about it you could pry that plastic shroud apart and get to the springs.
A quick question for the knowledgeable. How do i remove the stalks themselves in order to clean them up (remove corrosion and pitting).
Thanks in advance

Now for that...you'll have to pull the wheel and the column shroud. I assume you mean to pull the entire assembly. I don't think the stalks will screw in or out. Of course you could do some really good masking and do in place...if you are brave and a good mask'er. And Max....lets see some pictures of that stepnose lurking behind the hill. Love those!

@ Garwood....that must have been....exciting! Nothing like smoke pouring out of the column! You get the same result when the spring initially breaks!

Best Regards,
John M

Gday John, i thought that may have been the case. I think it'll be safer to take the whole shroud off. I don't like doing renovation works inside the car it makes me anxious -working in small spaces surrounded by hard to obtain and expensive parts!

My bella is not a stepnose, she's a 1974 GT Junior (http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/gt-1...-1600-gtj.html) badly in need of a new paintjob! I've started to strip the paint off to reveal small sections damaged by rust. (though i knew this when i bought it).

The rear valance and rear right floor pan i'll replace with entirely new sections but there are half a dozen little holes ranging from 2mm to 1cm created by the rust.

Do you have any experience with metalworking, what is the best way to fill in these holes? No worries if you're not sure but this is my latest problem and i thought i'd ask seeing she has your attention!

Regards
Max

mine did not come apart. i had to do just as John suggested. sanded down the stalks, masked off the rest, and painted them silver. they look pretty nice now.

i really wanted to take apart the turn switch assembly so i could clean up the contacts and tighten up the internal springs and detents. but the darn thing is riveted together, so i didn't want to screw up something that was working, if a little sloppy. i just gave the internals a good dousing with aerosol contact cleaner, then with DeoxIT, which is an electrical contact anti-oxidant and lubricant.

Sorry Max:

Not a metal man. I have the same thing going on in my SS on the wheel wells. Let me know what you find out. I am assuming its going to be best to cut it out and replace it all.

Best Regards,
John M
