Cool Bosch Computers FI and IGN.

Hi BB'ers - Spent my firs long weekend playiong with my "new" 86 Quad and have the electrical gremlins under control .

I removed the MOMO Indy wheel and put back a factory wheel since the MOMO blocked the gauges, and I'm skinny enough to squeeze behind it. While fitting the woodruf ? Key in the steering wheel I threw a huge SPARK and got a real tingle myself. No fuses blew , but I then disconnected the battery which I should have done right away.

This got me worried about the health of my computers - they weathered this incident but I was VERY pleased when car started and ran well.

So here is my concern -
1) How reliable are the computers in the car??

2)Does it make any sense to buy spare computers from a junkyard???

3) Are there any performance Chips available?

and lastly - a big one for me -

4) Do the computers include a rev limiter function like the GTV-6 and if so when does it kick in?

I've taken it up to 6.000RPM with no incident. My GTV-6 would rev limit with a bang at 6300RPM - but it did facilitate worry free power shifts.

Thanks All !

I've heard that they are delicate when it comes to electrical sparks/discharges at the battery terminals. Turn as many electrical devices off as possible before removing /replacing terminals and only R/R the battery terminals when absolutely necessary (like when working on the hot side of the electrical system, etc). Keep a good check on the main hot tie under the hood (on the right side fender wall next to the AFM; lots of big wires going into a covered terminal). If the fastener comes loose you will have arcing there and poor charging from the alternator; and possibly an ECU failure.

If you can get them cheap/functional it's great to have a spare or two of each.

I think you can send them in to have them re-mapped; but I don't think you can just 'chip' it like you can with the 164. If you do this you should buy a Junkyard ECU and have it chipped; it will save you from worry if it needs to be swapped for smog check, etc.

Not as far as I can tell. I over-revved my prior 86 Spider when a throttle linkage stuck. The Tach went to the peg!

Also, you know those little things that attach between the spark plug wire and the spark plugs? Well if one goes bad; don't just toss them out; replace them with new ones. They are resistors that are part of the electrical system; and also act as noise suppression for the Ignition/Electrical system. I've seen lots of cars with them removed if they are not present replace them and the plug wires with non-resistor wires. Use Bosch Platnum IV plugs; they are really good, and switch over to a good sealed core battery like the Optima (won't leak even if turned upside-down).

Any interest in selling your MOMO steering wheel? Let me know if you are!
