Not Charging

Please feel sorry for me. Not only did I fail colors in school, but I never understood electrical very well either. I've got a 1973 Berlina that I installed a Painless fuse block in as well as an upgrade 2 wire alternator. The alternator wouldn't charge and seemed to drain the battery, even when shut off, through the small wire. To solve, or bandaid this problem, I installed a diode off the alternator. It worked for a year or so, now the diode failed, probable due to heat from the exhaust manifold.

The diode has these numbers:
6A05
0610

I got it at Radio Shack. They don't carry it any more. I was going to relocate it to a cooler place. The diode is open in both directions.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, I need to wire in the alternator light so I can tell when I'm running off the battery. How do I do that?
