Charging

HELP! I have recently purchased an Alfa 156 and as I was returning home from work when suddenly the spedo died on me and stayed at 0mph, also the charge warning light came on. Now, I have checked over the car and when the engine is on there is indeed no charge coming off the altenator. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I believe it is either an earth or a fuse but I cannot find either of these that would affect the altenator. Help!
