Electric antenna problem

I've been "bench testing" an older Blaupunkt pushbutton radio (which is still loose), but with modern "guts", along with two 6.5" speakers and a modern electric antenna which are permanently installed (in a '69 Spider).

I can get the radio to play if I raise the antenna separately. So far so good.

There is a switched orange wire coming out of the radio which I assume is attached literally to the switch. If I hook up a power source to the antenna and radio, attach the orange wire to the blue antenna wire, and provide a separate ground for the antenna and a direct ground to the isolated radio, by turning on the switch, the antenna goes up, then down when I shut the switch off - however, the radio then won't work.

Unfortunately, either I'm doing something wrong or the radio can't (ummm) "walk" and chew gum at the same time.

When separately raising the antenna, I put power to both the blue and red wires, then lower using only the power/red wire - which seems weird to me. If I used a separate switch, which I'm really trying to avoid, rather than on/off, in order to get up/down I'd have red (hot) on one pole and red/blue on the other one. That can't be right.

I'm trying to get all the (correct) wires "laid" (under rubber mat and center carpets) today, so would like to have a fix before I do. If possible.

Should anyone care, the very compact vintage Blaupunkt with two outlets for a remote CD player and/or iPod along with (in theory) 40w per four channels and using (only) a pair of (reasonably priced) 6.5" Clarion coaxial (SRR1627) speakers sounds pretty darn good - especially for speakers in the kick panels.
