Hi Wayne,
I meet the roll bar and harness requirements at last year’s tech but I am thinking about having my hardtop on for this year's event with the roll bar, race seats and harness.
I use the hardtop here for the track events I go too (it's required) and it’s great for the rain days and additional security it has for traveling.
As far as the attachement points there are 2 J hooks that are bolted to the sides and hook around the convertible frame and 2 metal hooks that finger joint together on the rear deck (in front of the trunk) and the normal latches on the windshield. It's very sturdy and I have never had a problem with it.

Convention Time Trail Questions
Murray,
I see no reason why it wouldn't pass this year's inspection. Just don't forget the foam padding where the helmet may come in contact with the roll bar.
Thanks, Wayne

I have the same seat setup as George (the seat is high enough to be between the bar and driver, but I will need some padding on the petty bar.
Just curious, If it is raining will you let the cars on the track?

What if it rains?
We run rain or shine, just be sure to bring your rain tires!

Battery mount question
Hi Wayne,
I'm reviewing the tech form for "Battery, Steel Mount, Positive (terminal) Covered". My Spider has an Optima battery mounted in the spare tire well in a marine battery box located by a sort of 1.00 x 1.00 Aluminum angle cage. The battery is restrained on four sides and bottom by the angle, and has an Aluminum hold down angle piece inside the box held by threaded steel rods that extend to the bottom parts of the "cage". Does this strap need to be steel?. And, do the rods need to be run through steel (the bottom of the spare tire well)?.
Thanks,

Battery Mount Question
George, the description of how your battery is secured should pass tech inspection. Provided it is securely mounted and the positive terminal covered is the basic requirement. Using aluminum braces vs. steel will not matter. Most GT car specs call for steel bracing, but we're not running GT cars here.
GT specs state: Battery must be a Group 26 12Volt automotive top post battery. Battery must remain in the designated battery location in the stock form. Battery hold down must be 1" x 1" x 1/8" thick steel angle fastened with a minimum of two 5/16" diameter steel rods and nuts.
Thanks, Wayne

Can I just show up and watch? I don't have an Alfa (or any car at the moment actually). Should I get a ticket or register? I know the Autobahn is private property.
Thanks

Hi John,
You should at the very least go to the website and register. With the registration, you will have access to all events. If you do not register, it will cost $50 to just enter Autobahn. You should consider the Banquet too. It's going to be great! With John Tipler, Burt Levy, Bernardo Martinez and Gary Karbele (owner of new BAT 11).
See ya,
Carm

Thanks Carm,
I went ahead and registered. Should be a fun week. I'm amazed at all the events you've organized. I will try to make it to the dinner.
best,
John

I thought people could enter the track as spectators? My sister and bro-in-law live in Chicago, not car people, but were going to meet us at Autobahn. Now you are saying it will cost them $50 (each?) to meet us??

Timing is such that I can't attend the convention, but some of us were going to drive down (10 hours each way) to see the Track Event and Race. Someone had said a long time ago that there was only a nominal charge to get in. $250-$300 for gas split 3 ways is crazy enough, now add $50 each on top of that really makes me wonder.

I think we need to verify this, before getting too worried... I just spoke with Autobahn, and they have us at the North Track for the day on Thursday, but the gentleman on the phone said that we need to contact our AROC people. (Specifically Wayne Seely (sp?)) The arrangement on payments depends on how the contract was negotiated. He said that typically, if there is a charge when the track is contracted out, it is a nominal fee (like $5), and typically they do not seek to charge people for watching contracted events, but we need to verify this with our AROC contact. Now, if someone where entering the country club for the day (Autobahn is a country club) and they were not affiliated to a contracted event (spectators are typically considered "affiliated"), then that would be different...
Let's give Carm time to find out...
Best regards,

From the get go it was my understanding that spectators for the track events were welcome. Those that were not "registered" would be required to pay $7 to park at the Autobahn.
There are a number of us limited for a number of reasons to make a full attendance at the Chicago Convention. Some are planning to make a long drive to Joliet to see the track event.
It is important that the price of admission issue that seems to have arisen be cleared up while there is still time to cancel.
Best regards, Elio

Is this a requirement of the Chicago chapter? Reason I ask is that the AROC-USA Competition Code Section B, 1, 1.6 states "The positive battery cable should be taped or otherwise insulated to prevent short circuits". The operative word here being 'should' which to me means that it is not a requirement.
Although I understand the intent of the above statement in the Code, I believe it should worded something like 'the non-grounded battery terminal should (or perhaps must?) be insulated to prevent short circuits'. The use of the term 'non-grounded battery terminal' would then capture positive ground vehicles to the same standard as negative ground vehicles while the term battery 'terminal' identifies the non-grounded, non-insulated terminal on the battery (as opposed to an already insulated non-grounded battery 'cable').

The reason I asked is that the information about a $50 entry into the track is coming from the same person that back in March told me:

The way it will work will be like this: Those of us that " Register " for the Convention will end up with (2) parking stubs, one will be to enter Autobahn Track for both the "Time Trial and GTA Race", the other stub will be to enter Cantigny Park for the "Concours Event".
Parking for Cantigny Park for anyone without a "free" parking stub will pay $7.
Parking Entry for Autobahn without a "free" entry stub will cost anywhere from $5 - $7.

I just want to know if I need to tell my sister not to drive the 1 1/2 hours out to the track!!
