Two of the pumps are core/parts only conditions even by basic evaluation. The other two seem to pass MOST of the bench check areas, but since they were drained of oil, I couldn't check for the smell of gas in the oil. Seems to be one of the most important parts. Anyway the take-home message is just what I originally thought; there are plenty of core/parts pumps out there already so their only worth is as doors stops...pretty, pretty doors stops.

I had 4 or 5 pumps laying around, and had a friend drop them off at Wes Ingram's. At the very least they could be used for parts to rebuild others. (Practical recycling) Regards Ian

Smell the BC, even if the oil's been changed. Lots of times the stale gas smell remains.

Good advice!

Not to change topic, but is there any advantage to the adjustable BC over the non(or less)adjustable BC?

The adjustable ones on the 74 and earlier models allowed a little wider range of enrichment/leaning. So, yea, I suppose that makes them a little better. But to be practical about it, I've never felt the need to move mine out of normal in 10 years. For "tuners" (I think that's the hip term for it now), that adjustment may allow just a bit more range of cam and compression for the stock pump, before having to go to a hi-perf pump.

Hello,

Wes did explain it to me a couple of years ago like this:

The decel allows linear fuel increases/decreases. The Alt compensator allows very slight exponential changes. In other words if your idle mixture is good but you need a bit more fuel at the top end the decel will not help. But if you unscrew the Alt screw one turn it will not affect the idle noticably but will add fuel when you increase the throttle opening. The horiz lever in the pump rests at a higher point on the serrated lever which increases the stroke or travel to open the plungers.

With using the lever you simply do the same but just on a smaller scale.

Salutations from Germany

Bernhard

Thanks for the comments Bernard and Roadtrip. I had both types of BC, so I think I might install the adjustable on the new pump. I measured the distance to the tip of the bellows on the non-adjustable and it matched the distance on the "cold" setting in the adjustable BC.

I'll keep one or two for a few spare parts AND to bench practice working on the pump. Has come in handle for that several times already. That said, if anyone needs any spare parts (CSS, pulley etc), let me know are they're yours...for the cost of shipping.
