Talking Weber 40DCOE running rich

HI,

I have a HUGE problem, my 85 guilietta 2.0 seems to be very thirsty, very very thirsty, it kills 5 litres of petrol in about 50-60 killometers...THIS IS INBELIEVABLE!!!!

I heard someone on here saying that maybe the carbs are set to rich???My tuner said something about RICH when he set it last time round, because the car was jerking when driven at a constant speed, so he set it at RICH to make up for the jerking, after that the jerking went away, but the petrol bill is out of controll. I cant even drive my car where I want to!!!

Can someone please confirm if it is endeed a RICH setting and how do I get it to be LEAN and still have no jerking, I know I can just turn the distributor clockwise a bit to sort out the jerking problem, am I right???

SO, please how do I set the carbs back to lean setting, or any setting that wont kill my petrol bill all the time...

P.s, I am new to carbs, so dont know much accept they sound good without air box and where to set the revs...

Below about 3000rpm, the mixture is basically controlled by the idle mixture screws; above 3000, it's controlled by the jetting. Here's some fairly basic info that should help:

My experience is that you need a strong spark if you want to run lean mixtures with Webers. If you have an old points and condensor ignition then you should plan to replace it with an electronic ignition.

My 79 spider used to get 26 mpg when it had standard 10548 cams and 32 mm venturis in emissions type Webers. OTOH, my GTV only got 18 mpg with "classic" Webers and Isky racing cams. I switched to CB47 cams and emissions type Webers and it got 25+ mpg.

Your main jets should be 130 in you have 32mm venturis. Take a look at your idle jets and tell us what they are. 50F8 or 45F9 usually work well in classic carbs. I have successfully used 50F11's which are even leaner. I run 55F21 or 55F17 in emissions type Webers (40DCOE116/117 in my current car).

Not the SCREWS but the jets!. The screws only control air bleed at idle. The mixture is dependent on jetting.
To make any suggestion you need to provide full carb set up data.
"Jerking" is often caused by cam timing, as well as poor fuel economy. You might need to provide that data as well.

If it truly uses only 5 litres per 50-60 kilometers this corresponds to 8.3 - 10 liters per 100 kilometers. This equates to between 23.5 to 28.2 mpg. If this is indeed your fuel consumption on a 2 liter motor, then you are likely running lean rather than rich at least somewhere in the rev range.
