New Version of SPICA Fuel Supply Guide Available
Just finished the latest/last version of the SPICA fuel system diagnostic guide (ver. 6). If you want a copy PM me with an email address. Be forewarned that the file is almost 1.8mb, so if you're a dial-up dinosaur, it's gonna take a while.
This version has photos and a few new sections. I have it in MS WORD format and PDF. The MS WORD format is clearer and more chrisp than the PDF. I'll send MS WORD format unless you specify PDF.
CONTENTS:
System Description
Good Shop Practices when Working on Fuel Systems
Typical Failure Modes of the SPICA Fuel Supply System
Diagnostic Guide
APPENDIX 1 Replacement of Supply Pumps and Substituting Alternate Pumps
APPENDIX 2 Fuel Tank
APPENDIX 3 Testing a Fuel Supply Pump
APPENDIX 4 Testing the Front Fuel Filter Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)
(Earlier models only).
APPENDIX 5 Installing an inertia kill switch and electrical relay for the fuel
supply pump.
APPENDIX 6 Testing the Fuel Supply Pump PRV ('75 on, if equipped with
3-port pump)
APPENDIX 7 Testing an In-Tank Boost Pump ('75-'81 models only)
APPENDIX 8 Schematics

John,
Great job again. Did you add the procedure for installing the optional fuel pressure guage as well?

Not yet. I need to find a way to dampen the gauge to make it easily readable while the engine is running . . . or find a dampened gauge (for reasonable cost) to begin with.

Two things come to mind, RT. A 'snubber' from www.mcmaster.com will dampen the pulses or just use a liquid filled (usually glycerin) gauge.
Would love to have your diagnostic guide. Still have my email address?

Hi John,
I came accross this thread searching for advice on my Montreal Spica.
Last fall, on my way to the winter garage, the Spica belt broke which showed to be caused by a mechanically jammed Spica
Now the spring is here, I'm about to take Monti out to (try to) fix the Spica.
Although the Monti has the "double"(8 cylinder) Spica, I'm very interested in receiving your diagnostic guide.
Thanks in advance

Welcome Bill. I think you're our first Montreal owner on the BB. They are quite rare in the U.S.
Are you sure that the SPICA pump is seized? Can you turn it by hand?
Wes Ingram here in the U.S. can rebuild it, if you can't find a closer source in Europe. www.wesingram.com
Check your email for the guide.

Thanks for the welcome.
Will check my mail immediately.
After the belt broke, the pump was fully stuck.
After some (light) jurking it moved max 45º and made some bad mechanical noise (I stood by the side of a high way, so couldn't listen good)
Coming days I'll start working on it although the weather overhere is starting to get quite springlike and typical spring jobs also have to be done on/around the house and to the garden (I'm afraid I'll have to give in to my wife's priorities the coming days )

Greetings, RRT. Welcome to the AlfaBB.
PM means Private Message. To access the feature, you can click on the 'Private Messages' link at the top right of any page. Or you can click on the name of the person posting (that's in the top left of a post) which brings up an 'options' menu or you can scroll thru the 'Members List' and click on the name of the person you want to PM.

does the guide address the small round spica injection pump filter?...i've bought a couple cars over the years that P.O. stated had "fuel injection pump problems", that had nothing wrong other then the filter being fouled....
as a recall..the fuel pressure light was on prior to changing the filter....what has been your experience..thanks

I'm refreshing my alfa-engine and it needs to setup the spica. I've spent hours on the internet surching for usefull setup information (because I lost W.Ingrams manual).
I'm very interested in receiving your diagnostic guide.
Many thanks in advance
