Test, clean O2 sensor?

I saw in the L-Jet notes about reading the voltage output while driving to check the function of the oxygen sensor. Is there a way to test it while it's just sitting, off the car? And it mentiones cleaning the sensor; what with?

Dunno about cleaning, or at least haven't found any way that will work and not mess things up more than it helps.

You can bench test the sensor by using the multimeter and a propane torch.

Red lead on the sensor wire, black lead connected to the sensor body, put heat to the bit that sticks into the exhaust flow and the voltage output will change markedly, then return to the original reading as it cools.
