Question about Wes

I'm thinking of buying a rebuilt Spica from Wes. He charges $750 plus a "core charge" which is refunded once he receives your old Spica. I prefer to keep the Spica that's already in my 74 GTV for a spare, without giving it to Wes to get a "core charge" rebate.

I was thinking of getting a Spica on ebay to send to him as the core. Anyone know what the "core charge" cost is? (Wes did not reply to an e-mail). I'd like to know the max I should pay for a "core" Spica.

Also does the core pump need to include the injectors too?

Wes' web site (www.wesingram.com) currently shows a core charge of $75. Wes only needs the pump, not the fuel lines, intake manifold or injectors. He will even ask you to keep the pulley before sending it.

My experience is that is often slow with email but usually answers the phone directly. I talked to him yesterday.

I don't blame you for wanting to keep your old 74 pump. If the plungers are venting fuel into the oil, why do you need a rebuilt pump? If it is leaking, then it's not much good as a spare. The caveat is that you want to get a rebuilt pump that has the 74 T255/1 3D cam in it since it's the best of the bunch. Finding 74 model pumps on ebay is difficult and they usually command a higher price than the leaner, later model pumps.

My (questionable) reason for a rebuilt pump

I have read good things about the upgrades that an Ingram-ized pump has that make it last longer. Perhaps getting a pump from Wes without actually having problems with my existing pump is overkill and a waste of money. But I can't tell if my pump needs servicing or replacing, and I don't like the idea that it could be diluting my oil with fuel.

I am also planning on adding Euro cams in the Spring, and think that Wes would provide a pump with a setup that matches the new cams.

All ideas and thoughts are welcome.

If your current pump is good, and all you are doing is putting in Euro cams, you don't need a modified pump. I had the Euro cams with 10:1 pistons and the stock '74 pump worked just fine.

I agree, you're stock 74 pump should be fine with pistons and european cams or 1750 cams. If you decide to move up to a more radical cam, then a HP-150 pump would probably make sense. At any rate Wes can advise you if you tell him exactly how you plan on building the engine.
