New Spica Pumps

No, I do not currently have a Spica car. I am just looking to expand my knowledge base. Are "new" (rebuilt?) Spica pumps only available from Alfa? Is there a supply source here in the US? Can an existing pump be "rebuilt" or is it simply used as a core exchange? My previous experience with this, and I admit it is somewhat dated, was only the "factory" could rebuilt and/or supply Spica pumps.

AlfaMale,

SPICA pumps aren't very hard to come by, but (more importantly), they are very expensive.

That being said, there are several ways that you can go to get a replacement. If you visit www.alfacentro.com, they have a bunch o parts vendors web-sites in their 'resources' section. Of those, International Auto Parts (IAP), Center-line, Linea Rossa, AR Ricambi all usually carry either re-manufatctured or new pumps. The IAP site lists a remanufacturec pump for $750. Another less expensive option might be to buy a used one or even a whole used parts car (usually much less than $750)...of course when you buy used, well...you just never know what you're getting!

That's all I've got to say on the matter...but there are lots of other guys on here with great advice.

Cheers,

Well, that's the rub..

There aren't any new ones available, from anyone. Or new parts to rebuild pumps, either.

The rebuilt pumps sold by Wes Ingram are assembled using used plungers from scrapped pumps. Wes does a great job of matching up sets and gets some pretty amazing tolerances. I think his pumps are as good as new - or in the case of his HP modified pumps better than new.

But I fear the day when the supply of plungers dries up.

Joe

Wes Ingram is the premier rebuilder of SPICA pumps. His overhauls produce a better than original pump because he incorporates several durability improvements. For high-perf motors, he can match a pump's fuel cam to get the most out of the compression and cam setup.

In reality, $750 for a rebuilt pump is very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the rebuild and professional advice you get.

BTW, I just had the exhaust head pipes on my old Jeep Cherokee rust/crack, and that cost me $185 for bending some tin. By comparison a rebuilt SPICA pump is a BARGAIN.

You're thinking about the bad old days in the 70s when Alfa corporate was scared that consumers tinkering with pumps might cause the EPA to come down on them . . . . . hence they refused to release much info on the system and demanded that the pumps not be dismantled at all by anyone other than the factory overhaul facility. In reality, MOST of the pumps sent in for rebuild had NOTHING wrong with them.

With the amount of tech material available now, knowledgeable owners can repair just about anything except worn plungers and liners.
