The Spica pump needs a lubricant just like an engine needs oil. In this case, the lubricant is gasoline, not lead. This is also why you should never run a Spica pump if the car doesn't have any gas. It's the same as running an engine without any oil. It should also be noted that the Spica pump was originally designed as pump for diesel engines, and diesel is a better lubricant than gasoline. Marvel Mystery Oil improves the lubricity of gasoline. The Spica gurus recommend it as an additive that will extend the life of your pump, since better lubrication means less wear and tear. How much more will it extend the life of the pump? I really don't know. I must also confess that my '74 Spider has its original pump, and I had never used MMO until rather recently. I figured if several gurus who take these pumps apart and rebuild them say that it is a good idea to add the MMO, then it must be a good idea to do so.
Best regards,
