cleaning up bumpers.

Hi Guy's
I've taken the bumpers off of my '86 spider Veloce. The car is off at the body shop being resprayed at the moment.

I'd like to clean up the bumpers before I put them back on.

Has anybody got any advice?

Can I simply sand down the existing silvery/grey finish.. fill any dings 'n dangs with body filler, prime and top coat?

Do I need any special paint? I'm not too sure what the bumpers are made of they feel like metal but they could be plastic

Any help appreciated

TIA

JaB

JaB,
Assuming your bumpers are like the U.S. ones on my '85 spider they are plastic with an aluminium center (inner?) section. When I redid mine I sanded, filled with one of the Evercoat fillers for plastics (stays flexible, bends well and sands easily), primed & painted using plastic paints (the silver had to be shaken very well and very frequently or it looked wretched) from my local auto paint dealer. I can get you the actual product names this evening if you'd like, but not sure how much good that would do you. Not hard to do, standard warnings about not overtightening the lenses set into the front bumper, etc cetera.

Jab,
I just used Duplicolor bumper/trim paint (black) and am very pleased.
A light filling with body putty (fiberglass bumpers), sanding till smooth and a wipe down with thinner and a good soapy wash, then a complete drying/heating in the sun.
They look good.
I'll post pictures of the results when I get a chance
