Windshield and Rear window removal????

I am stripping my chassis (73 gtv) for a complete restore and it is time to remove the GLASS as well as the alluminum trim around it.!. Any advice on how to go about this???? Should I just call in the Pros??? Although... they say they don't guarantee that the windshield will come out in one peice.

Thanks
Sprintn

PS As for the door latch that is part of the body held on with three allen screws and one rivet of sorts... should this come off, or should it get painted?????

Do not remove the trim from the rubber. Get inside the car ... have 2 people outside the car (one each side) and using your feet (socks on) push the windscreen out.

Once glass is out ... you can remove the trim if you want to.

My brother in-law helped me remove the windscreens on my car and no problem ... but I was sh!tting myself ... he wasn't as he has done this many times.

Be prepared though for breakages ... we broke my Alfa Sud one after getting it 99% out.

Glass can be replaced for these common cars ... image trying to remove a 8c2900B's windscreen

That's funny $hit!!!! But I guess you're serious.
What do I do if the aluminum trim neets some work, straightening out, or just plain replacing? Do I get a new rubber strip as well????

Thanks for the input! Did you catch my question regarding removal of the door latch that is part of the chassis, in my last e-mail????

Quentin

Is you car a US spec GTV? If so, it probably has a glue-in windshield. If so, then it needs to be cut out. If you have the gasketed type, I'd cut it out as well. The old gasket is more than likely hard and not as flexible. So, getting it back in without cracking the windshield will be risky. Cut out the old and invest in a new gasket.

Hi Quentin,

If you have a windshield with a heavy gasket it will push out as PSK says. But you don't need as much force if you wet the inside of the gasket with a lubricant. I use Vinylex or Armorall. Others I know use Windex. Simply go in the car and bend the gasket away from the headliner and spray the lub on it all the way across the top and down the sides so you have slippery rubber.
Then stand in the open door with one hand inside and one outside and push the windshield out top first and about half way down the side. Run around to the other side and push it out half way down. Then spray the lub into the gasket along the bottom (I do both sides). It is possible to now push each side out further down and lift the glass out of the gasket.

The whole operation works better if you have two people one on each side.

To my knowledge, glue in glass is not considered replaceable. It is therefore difficult to cut it out in one piece.

FYI:
I have the glue in windshields in stock and the some rubber gasket ones due in shortly. We had the glue ins run off from safevue which used to produce these windshields for many years. Good luck and if you need a new one the prices are not too bad..
