Work begun on my '71 GTV 1750

I purchased this car last year and it has been sitting under my carport since then. I decided it was time to start work on the car. Through a member of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Atlanta, GA, I was steered to Bart Miller of RoadSpeed Garage in Cleveland, GA to get the car put back into shape. Car was towed to Bart's garage and we examined the car and discussed what I wanted to do to it. Work has begun and I'm very pleased with what has been done.

I'm posting a few pics to get the thread started and will post additional pics shortly.

Bart has stripped the car down to the shell. We found a few issues. More on that later.

I think that's my favorite GTV color. I'm also convinced that only GTVs look good in that color; it's ghastly on almost any other car.

Bob:

I agree with you. I've not seen another Alfa model painted this color. When we get to the point of painting the car, it will be painted the same color.

Can't wait to see the progress! I am sure Bart will do a great job for you. I might suggest that, if you haven't already thought about it you should consider welding up the radio antenna hole in the fender.

Rich

The antenna hole will be welded up. I'm thinking about welding up all the rear side marker light holes and welding up the smaller holes for the front side marker lights and then mounting the round euro side marker lights up front. I like the way a GTV looks with the smaller lights.

I agree. Those US only market side markers detract from the GT silky smooth lines.

In terms of Alfa 105s I would agree, however, and if not aware Fiat also used the same colour on the AC 124 sport and 850 S2 coupe. Different paint color name but same colour and it looks great on these cars too. So x3 for staying with this colour and ditto agree have never liked the yucky side markers on 105s. Agree with pancho 105s have nice clean lines which are spoilt by such items

Wow, wasn't there a lot of nasty stuff hiding below the paint, so sure bet you are glad (in the end after the cost of repairs fades into the memory), that you are getting this all sorted out. GTVs sure can rust in some strange places, even when there are no obvious signs of damage, eg, around the window aperatures. I almost am dreading to know what I will find when I get around to my GTV.

Are the repair patches what you have had to had done, or, are they previous work undertaken ?? Either way, once all sorted it will be really nice and re-assuring to know that there is metal where once there was rust !!

Looking forward to your progress on this one.

Super1600

All of this was under the paint and filler. The shop that blasted the car said there were 4 coats of paint on it. Some of the patches were riveted to the car just above where the rust stopped. No attempt was made to cut out the rust. There are a couple of spots where there are patches over patches. I was not expecting this much to be wrong with the body. When we got the car back from being blasted we discussed what was good about the car and what would have to be repaired. At this point I decided the car was not going to be scrapped or end up as a parts car. When all of the metal work is complete, I will have a solid car.

Yeouch, I had thought that might regrettably have been the answer but didn't want to offend in case they were the repairs done for you. Sure glad to hear not so and that it will be repaired properly. It should be good when completed.
