AROCSD Tour to Campo--Sunday, May 18

Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, Campo Facility and the Dulzura Café

Dulzura Café is a long standing business in the community and it has had it’s ups and downs. Right now it is a thriving business and serves delicious meals. Tourists, motorcyclists and locals regularly patronize this establishment for food and refreshments.

It is currently owned by Earl and Kitti Pfeifer and they bought it about 1977. It was really run down, but they have put new life in this old restaurant. Earl and Kitti have decorated the restaurant into a rustic country charm decor with lots of antiques on the walls and in the nooks and crannies. The back dining room has license plates for almost every state in the Union and lots of old movie posters. Many old animal horns and deer heads hang on the walls. Most of all there is a friendly atmosphere in the entire restaurant.

Campo Facility 2:00 pm
The Museum's main facility is located in Campo, California, about 45 miles east of downtown San Diego. More than eighty major pieces of railroad equipment are on display, with many of them in various stages of restoration by the volunteers, who are responsible for every phase of its operation.
The Golden State has been in operation since 1986. It’s a pleasant 12 to 16-mile round-trip journey into the history of railroading in the Pacific Southwest. We leave from the historic Campo Depot for the 60 to 90-minute ride. The Golden State operates between Campo and Miller Creek or between Campo and Division. We’re not yet sure which one it will be on the 18th. Golden State locomotive cab rides are also available.
Fares:
Adult $15 Note: Discount fares apply to Seniors (65 and up). The Museum's on-line reservation system may be used to place individual reservations.

Adult Discount $12
Group $12
Child 6-12 $5
Child 5 and under Free
Locomotive Cab Ride $35

We’re planning to meet at the Dulzura Village Café (17023 Highway 94, Dulzura, CA, (619) 468-9591) at 11:00 am and enjoy the east county atmosphere. It’s about a 20 mile ride from the Dulzura Café to the Campo facility. The train leaves at 2:30. As of press, there are 125 seats on the Golden State available. There are 2 available locomotive seats. For those who want to be guaranteed a seat, reservations can be made at:

If you have time you might want to take in the Antique Truck & Engine Museum. It's just across the tracks from the Railway Museum. Their collection includes some Mack trucks used to build Hoover Dam and some HUGE industrial engines.

The last time I visited the Railway Museum the guys in the restoration shop were willing to open all of the access doors on the locomotives so we could have a look at the inner workings. Of special interest is the unusual Fairbanks Morse loco with it's twin crankshaft opposed piston engine.

MTM activities

Hey Geezer,

We had planned on stopping there, one of our more active members is also a member of that organization, but they are only open on Saturdays and we are going out on Sunday. The train trip on Saturday is an all day affair to Tecate, Mexico; and we found out that to go across the border on the train requires submitting a manifest of all attendees and blah blah blah for Homeland Security. So we opted for the short ride on Sunday instead.

Ciao!

Looks like I'll be there with pops in the GTV6, the spider has a radiator leak that will not be fixed by tomorrow. Lets just hope there's no female intervention this trip

The last time that I was there I took the short ride. The ride is relaxing and fun. Enjoy the trip & the conversation. I wish I still lived in the area I would tag along.

Too bad the truck museum will be closed. That will be another excuse to take a trip back to Campo. BTW if you should decide to venture further east , to Jacumba, the nudists usually take their bike ride in sundays.

One of my good friends is a retired navy Commander and a staunch nudist. I would never want to see his butt naked on a bike as long as I live, no offense to the nudist on the bb but that's how I roll...

We had a turn out of about eleven or twelve people, three Alfa's since it was bukoo hot and many a Duetto or Giulia did not offer ample interior cooling so the rest drove in modern comfort. My GTV6 has a 135 amp alt and Milano AC so it was very nice when I used it and everyone seemed cool and comfy. Breakfast at the Dulzura Cafe was good, we saw many a bike group, pedal and motorized enjoying the day. The Triumph guys had a group of maybe ten 70's era bikes roaring down the highway and it looked fun. From the cafe we drove east to the museum and rail yard and there were many third gear twisties that brought out the fun in my car and if it were not for the two motorcycle crashes we would have made even better time. I hope there were no fatalities. The train museum and ride were great, we stopped in a tunnel that separates U.S. and Mexico then came back to see some great old steam engine and mail/military/custom cars in the display shop.

Well enough of that, here are some pictures.

Had to put a shot of the restored steam engine, it works great but under inspection it has a leak in the boiler so it requires a $250K refit before it can run again.
