Smestas, Snaidy, Italcarguy, and I are gonna party hard Thursday and Friday nights if anyone wishes to join. We'll be hitting up the auction and of course the bars.

Monterey is the real deal.
I second Anthony , it is an upscale event that shouldn't be missed , if within budget. Cars cars cars really nice ones!

I want to come in the Q to Concorso, but I am not sure about the price. How high will price of this event go before people say enough is enough? At this point I am thinking of foregoing the crowd, the cost and lack of a place to stay to put my efforts into going to the French Italian show. At least at this point it is still free. My efforts will be to try and make the Italian show in SF if that is a possibilty and the show at the school. Now if a car show comes up in the Sacramento region with a class for me, I think I might make those too.

Stay in Salinas ($85 night if you booked early) or even Santa Cruz, instead of Monterey. That wat you get to drive your car around. Monterey is way too touristy (stay away from the pier) and expensive unless you like to pay more for the experience. If it wasn't for the Vintage Races I wouldn't go at all.
if you were to go an pay $300/night for a room (3 nights) , $125 Concorso, 2 days at Seca, top level restaurants, travel 600 miles rdtrip, etc. Why not just get a plane ticket and fly to Italy and rent a new Alfa to drive around for a few days!!

After going to these events since the early '90s, I've learned to plan ahead.
Each year, the planning begins in January -- rates are cheapest then.
The weekend gets substantially more expensive as the August date draws nearer. This is nothing new, and has been the case for years.
While I do bring my Italian cars, and show them at the Concorso Italiano, I mostly enjoy walking around both at the show and around Monterey and see/hear/smell all sorts of bella macchina's cruisin' around. So, in my book, it's worth the price to stay in Monterey, Pacific Grove, or Carmel even though it's more pricey than Salinas.
You simply don't run into a Ferrari 250 GTO parallel parked on the street, behind a Pantera, a few blocks away from several 2600 Spiders in Salinas
The auctions are fun to attend too ... people get really emotional at these events. Since I don't watch much soap opera, it's fills my quota for the year and it's car related!

I'm going to miss the concourse but I will be at the races. I'm not sure what car I will bring down. It will most likely be the Alfa as everyone has seen the Datsun and its currently broken (again) and might not be fixed by then.
Is anyone coming up to the Wine Country Classic next weekend? (Sorry off topic)
Will

Sounds great....you go to the races like Pat and I camped except you left off the lap top, generator, camp stove, porta-potty, cots, etc. Whoever said you had to be inconvenienced or uncomfortable to go to the races or camping?

Haig,
Dump the Taittinger and get some nice RD for a "dosage zero" champagne, or better yet, vintage Krug (88 or 89 are my favorites). Cheers!

Haig,
Sounds good! We just this year finished the last of a case of Opus One purchased in Napa a while back (probably going on 20 years). I'd be glad to meet up when I get to LA end of next month - I'll bring the bubbly!

I wonder if I should bring the Milano. It's not even close to being concours material.

I think the best part will be the Thursday morning run from the San Fernando Valley to the Monterey Bay area. I'm working on a fun route. We should get there just in time for lunch in Carmel on Thursday.

Thanks, but....sorry, it will have to be virtual for the next few years, how many, I'm not sure; depends on whether I can outlast the dean or she outlasts me. The previous dean was much more accommodating about the CI and LS weekend being the same as "rah, rah" convocation Friday at which attendance is mandated unless of course I'm hospitalized, die, etc. by her definition.
She's trying to make her mark and has caused nothing but trouble with many of us going to the union about things that she's tried to mandate and can't, among them dress code when there is none on campus. She thinks "everyone" is a reflection of her and we should dress to that standard while others on campus where shorts, tank tops, and sandals. Not advocating that but a "happy" medium somewhere between that and having a personal "Nordie" shopper.
Not the happiest place on earth right now....a place to be endured.
