Kohler International Challenge with Brian Redman

Anyone going up to Elk Hart Lake next week for one of the finest vintage parties...I mean races? It's worth it if only to be in Elk Hart on Friday night for the parade and party that follows. I'm going up on Wednesday night and I'll be there with Roman Tucker, Dr. Martinez (Bernardo can't make it), Rob Mocas, and possibly a few others. I see that Erik Wood will be there along with Rob Davenport. So far the entry list only shows about a 1/2 dozen Alfa's, but I'm sure that there will be quite a few more than that by next week.

We will be at the track on Wednesday night. See you there, Eliseo! For once, it isn't just my 7 year old son and me. We actually talked the girls into coming to the race.

Erik

What a great weekend! It was nice to meet Eliseo, see Rob, Erik, and Dr. Martinez! Sorry that Erik's GTV engine broke down on Saturday. I would have liked to watch the very close race in my class between Rob Davenport in his GTV and Russ Theus in his Lotus Cortina. The Alfa beat the Cortina by less than a second on an 8 lap race! Their fastest lap times where right with Erik's fastest before his engine broke...at 2:45. Would have been a great 3 car race--two Alfa's and a Cortina! I was just behind Eliseo at 2:51. I have a lot to learn, but Roman built a great race car for me.

One bizarre and almost tragic accident happened during the race car parade into the town of Elkhart on Friday night. I was in line just behind a beautiful orange McLaren Can Am car. We pulled down the back road and turned left onto the main road into town. The McLaren tried to do a burnout, but the car went flying off of the road to the right narrowly missing several spectators along the road. The McLaren went airborn and flipped upside down about 30 feet off of the road in a swamp! I just sat there for a second not quite sure that I just saw what I had just seen. I believe that the driver of the car (who turned out to be the machanic and his son) were not hurt too bad. They could have been killed, but where probably fortunate to land in the swamp. Neither of them was strapped into the car. I never saw the car again the rest of the weekend so I don't know the extent of the damage. Not exactly what you want to do to an 800 HP 40 year old race car worth at least $250K!

Peter, didn't you mean to write "EX-mechanic"!

The race between Rob and the Cortina was very fun to watch! Both hit lapped traffic in turn 14 on the last lap. A very slow MGB almost prevented the Alfa win. Thank goodness he knew enough to get out of the way.

Erik

Sounds like a great weekend. Too bad you had no camera in the car for the drive into town. More pictures!

I realized about 5 minutes before the parade was about to start that I forgot my camera I was even considering holding my vid cam in my hand and catching some of the drive. That would have been wild to catch that idiot flying into the swamp.

There were 2 Porsches fighting for first in Group 8. They lapped me on the last lap and I'm pretty sure that the 914 bumped the 911 in the carosel to win the race. Those guys were flying! 2:33 lap times.

I too had a lot of fun! It was a HOT weekend! My engine oil got to 300 Deg. F!!!!

Also bad luck that Dr. Martinez's had to quit due to a stock accelerator pedal.

Rob Davenport and Eric Wood were just WAY TOO FAST for the rest of the Alfas, there was just no comparison. Dr. Martinez-Peter-Myself and Rob Mocas were seconds from them. Rob was not able to run many laps but I am sure he would have been very fast as well.

I did not know you saw the Maclaren fly!

I do have more pictures and some friends took several other pictures, waiting form them to send them so I can post them.

Overall a good weekend, would have been much beter if we had seen Rob Mocas and Eric Wood make the race!

Two other Alfas were also in the race, a Spider in group 1 and another GTV in group 8.
