Events in California next year

Hi,

I'm going to be travelling through California this year. I'm from the UK originally and doing a season in Whistler BC at the moment, before heading south at the end of April.

Being a serious car nut, I want to take in as much of the car culture as possible. I've lined up a few VW events to go to but I'm finding my computer is increasingly filling up with Alfa pics, so is there anything Alfa-related going on between about May 1st to early July next year?

I'm also looking at spending about a month in San Francisco and I'd love to do some volunteering work for at an Alfa/classic resto shop while I'm there. Any Alfa specialists in the SF area? I'm talking about helping out for nothing here, not interested in earning money. I just want to get into the lifestyle and experience the place as best I can in the short time I have there.

Thanks!
Graham.

Not one of your "main events" for sure but if you get to So Cal you don't want to miss Cars and Coffee Irvine - every Saturday morning from 7 to 9 AM.

Tom:

If you are going to be in northern California, you might want to surf on over to http://www.alfaromeoassociation.org/...1_Calendar.pdf to check out the calendar of that club.

If you travels bring you down here to southern California, checkout our club's calendar at AROSC Calendar, 2011

And as cabikefreak said, Cars & Coffee in Irvine is an event not to be missed. There is usually a good Alfa contingent there.

Alfa events

Graham,

The first weekend of June is The Wine Country Classic at Infineon Raceway. This event is put on by Steve Earl who started the Monterey Vintage events. Not only Alfas but alot of great cars. This year McLaren is the honored marque.

There are some very well known restoration shops in the Bay Area. Conrad Stevenson in Berkeley, Phil Reilly and Company in Marin and John Anderson at Infineon. There are probably some more but these are the ones I remember right now.

Another thing you may want to check out is the 24 Hours of Lemons will be running in Reno May 14-15. This years race is supposed to be a true 24 hour event. We run a team of two Alfettas and there will probably be at least a couple more Alfas. Let me know if you would be interested in helping our team. We've already let one Brit on the team so you know we'll have some Guinness.

cabikefreak - nice suggestions, thanks! I'll check it out, the more the merrier. Doesn't matter about the size of the event, just that there are cars there! Most people have all sorts of stuff on their computers hard-drive - I just have pictures of cars. I should probably see someone about that.... ;-)

Alfajay - thanks. The plan at the moment is to buy myself a car (preferably a Fiat 124 Spyder or something at least vaguely interesting that's cheap enough....but might just be a cheap anonymous eBay heap in the end) to use in and around San Francisco, then use it to drive to Infineon Raceway to be a track ambassador volunteer for the Sonoma Classic and then south to LA on Highway 1. So I'll hopefully be in and around both Northern and Southern California.

Alfaguy35 - are the Wine Country Classic and the Sonoma Classic the same thing? I think the Sonoma Classic is June 4th/5th and I'm hoping to be there. As above, I'm already registered on their Track Ambassador program so I'm hoping to be there in a volunteer capacity. For anyone who loves this kind of event and finds themselves in the UK in June sort of time, check out the Goodwood Festival of Speed. For anyone who loves old cars, this event is just awesome.
I'll check out those body shops and classic specialists, thanks. There's a few places I've considered contacting to ask if they'll let me kick around and help out for a few days - there's a Porsche parts place called EASY over the Bay in Emeryville that's on the list, too. I did used to work in a bodyshop in the UK, but only washing cars, and I've had a few resto projects going myself before.
As for the race at Reno....I think I'd be daft to turn it down! I've just looked it up on a map and the distance between SF and Reno looks do-able in a day (I'm English, North American distances completely screw my brain!). The idea is to get to SF for about May 6th. I'm hoping to do some skydiving up in Cloverdale but other than that I have no plans really, so if I get the chance to come and be a part of something unique like that, then yes, most def! I was originally planning on doing some racing myself while in the US (I've just been trying to renew my UK race licence online) but I don't think I'm going to have the cash for that. We'll definately chat on PM when I have a minute. :-D

Man, I'm excited for all this. Life is good right now, very good indeed. Thank-you everybody for the responses, it's a very pleasant community you have going here.

Graham.

Graham,

Do be sure to check out the Blackhawk Collection when you're here in the SF area (it's about 45 minute drive East from SF). Great collection of spectactular cars that is always changing. Blackhawk Museum

Of course, car collections. I'd completely forgotten about that element of things. Thanks for the recommendations.

Junk-yards is another thing I'll be looking to check out. I'm not sure what the situation is in the US, but old fashioned junk yards are getting few and far between in the UK now, so it would be nice to walk amongst some rusted old wrecks (that aren't on my own driveway...).

Of course, can't forget Willow Springs! I found myself on YouTube the other looking for track guides. There's one guy with a 911 who's put up a few different videos of hot laps, listing what gear he was in, etc. Very informative, especially for someone who loves racing.

Hey! Sweet, when I visited Vancouver/Whistler back in '08 just for a holiday we went over to Vancouver Island for a day and visited Victoria. We slightly underestimated the travel time involved though (2 buses, then a ferry, then another bus) to get there and only had about an hour in Victoria before we had to head home! Was cool though. A girl recently left the hotel I work at who originally came from Nanaimo, I believe her mum still lives over there.

Vancouver reminds me of SF in some ways, especially the Kitsilano neighbourhood. I'll be spending a couple of days down there after I leave Whistler before saying goodbye to Canada and heading south.

Cheers!
Graham.
