Watkins Glen Event

From the Elmira, NY Star Gazette:

"For the second day in a row, a large turnout of fans also enjoyed what has grown to be the largest vintage racing event in the United States, according to the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association, the event's sanctioning body.

Nearly 500 vintage and historic race cars took part in 11 sprint races from five and eight laps in length on the Glen's 3.4-mile Grand Prix layout.

There were several feature races, including an Alfa Romeo Reunion that seemed to continue the theme of winning being secondary.

Race leader Joe Nastasi, driving a 1972 Alfa T33 sports racer, pulled into the pits before the finish to let Dino Crestcentini win with his 1985 Alfa Romeo Formula 3 car.

"I went out to show my car in the feature, I didn't need to race," said Nastasi, who brought four versions of the exotic-looking Alfa Romeo T33s endurance racers to the Glen for the special event, which drew more than 50 entrants in the Italian-made cars."

Without a doubt, it was the best vintage race meet I have ever participated in. The Alfa drivers and fans were helpful, especially to Will Painter, who blew his engine after towing across the country from California. He procured a street engine and with the help of fans, unknown to him, installed the replacement engine, thus enabling him to participate on the track. Full marks to Peter Krause & Sam Smith for making all this possible. Oh yes, Joe Nastasi's prototypes were spectacular.
