Alfa Century 2010

AROC’s Capital Chapter Selected to Host Alfa Romeo’s Centennial Celebration in June 2010

Although almost two years away, planning has already begun for Alfa’s Centennial in 2010. With everyone looking forward to next year’s convention in beautiful Portland Oregon, for 2010 the convention will shift coasts and be held in Frederick Maryland, near Washington, DC.

Celebrating 100 years of Alfa Romeo, the Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club has selected the Capital Chapter to host its annual gathering and convention, to be held 21-27 June, 2010. With an expected attendance of more than 500 Alfa Romeo enthusiasts and their families, the Capital Chapter of the Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club has selected the Francis Scott Key Holiday Inn and Conference Center as its Convention Headquarters. A car show open to the public will feature 100 years of this significant Italian auto maker and will be held on Saturday, 26 June at The Stone Manor Country Club, in Middletown, MD just a few minutes from Frederick. A day of auto racing events is being planned for Friday, 25 June. This will feature a few laps by some of Alfa Romeo’s most historic pre-war and post-war racing cars at nearby Summit Point Motor Sports Park in Summit Point, WV. An Autocross driving event, featuring members’ cars is also planned at Frederick’s Harry Grove Stadium on Sunday, 27 June. With a ‘Covered-Bridges’ Gimmick Rally and a TSD rally using some spectacular country roads, a variety of tours to Washington DC, several Civil War Battlefields and other historic sites along with several other fun events, Alfa Century 2010 should definitely be ‘penciled-in’ on your calendar!

Harlan Hadley, an architect and long-time motorcycle and automotive enthusiast is the President of the Capital Chapter of the Alfa Romeo Owner’s Club, and is the Chairman of the Concorso event. Explaining why historic Frederick was selected as the location for this historic centennial celebration, he said that “Frederick and the surrounding countryside offer our members some of the best driving roads anywhere! Additionally, Frederick offers great accommodations and restaurants at lower prices than areas closer to DC or Baltimore, while also offering less traffic and better access to the race track at Summit Point. The rich history of the area also offers a lot for our vacationing members and their families and is less than an hour’s drive from Washington DC. We are all very excited about the centennial celebrations and are honored that our chapter has been selected to host this historic event!”

Will the driving event at Summit Point Motorsports Park be held on the Main Circuit or the Shenandoah Circuit?

We will have the whole track, and will use the main circuit for the Alfa Time Trials and the vintage car demonstration.

ALFA CENTURY NEWS UPDATE!!!!

ALFA CENTURY 2010

Come help us celebrate ALFA’s 100th birthday!

Where? Headquartered in the heart of scenic Maryland, the historic city of Frederick is easily accessed by car and is just 45 minutes outside Washington DC, with easy access to Dulles Airport, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport. The Frederick Holiday Inn & Convention Center is our convention hotel and is conveniently located near shopping centers, restaurants and highways.
When? Beginning on Wednesday June 23, and going through Sunday June 27 2010, with a Pre-Convention Tour taking place on Monday June 21 and Tuesday June 22.

Alfa Century 2010, the AROC National Convention and Alfa Centennial Celebration will be jam-packed with fun events! In addition to all the great activities, we will also have rooms full of Alfa vendors, selling everything from new and used Alfa parts to clothes, artwork, toys, books and lots of other interesting items.

Monday June 21 and Tuesday June 22:
A Pre-Convention Targa Florio Tribute Tour will take lucky participants on a very special and personalized visit to Philadelphia’s Simeone Museum, great driving down twisty roads through the Pennsylvania and Maryland countryside, visits of David George’s fabulous pre-war auto restoration shop, the Ladew Topiary Gardens and maybe even a nice winery, with regular rest stops, good food and, of course, an overnight stop at a hotel on the way. Registration will be limited, so sign up early!

Wednesday, June 23, 2010:
The annual AROC Board of Directors Meeting - open to all AROC members - will be held at the convention hotel beginning at 8AM. Alternatively, there will be a bus leaving the hotel at about 1PM for a tour of Historic Frederick, stopping to let folks pursue a walking tour, do some shopping and then meet up for dinner. The AROC Board and other meeting attendees will join the group for dinner. After the meal, a bus will return everyone to the convention hotel.

Thursday, June 24, 2010:
Thursday is track day! The day will begin early at the historic, but thoroughly updated Summit Point Raceway. Registered racers will do their best to reduce lap times while spectators cheer them on at the Time Trials. During lunch hour, a safety car will lead non-racers around the track for some Parade Laps. And later in the afternoon, the Alfa Race Car Demonstration will be something you won’t want to miss, as this special ALFA 100th anniversary event will feature several amazing, historic and valuable Alfa Romeo Racers being driven in anger - as was intended!

If a day at the track isn’t your cup of tea, there will be a Capital Bus Tour leaving the hotel at 9AM headed for Washington DC. This is a full-day tour and guests will enjoy a visit to some of the wonderful monuments and museums in our nation’s capital. The bus will pick you up at a convenient location and get you back to the hotel in time for dinner. Or, if you prefer driving through the country instead, why not take the Eisenhower Farm Driving Tour, which will depart from the convention hotel at 9AM and end up at Summit Point Raceway, just in time to see the Vintage Alfa Racecar Demonstration? This tour will take you through Gettysburg and to the 34th President’s favorite home. Later on, everyone is invited to join us for the Welcome Reception and Alfa Centennial Celebrations, which will be held at the convention hotel. We will be commemorating the Official 100th Anniversary of A.L.F.A. with a special ceremony and a big birthday cake! Of course, our Chapter Newsletter Editors, Future Convention Planners, Chapter Webmasters and other groups will also want to have their meetings, so arrangements are being made for these groups to be provided meeting space at the hotel.

Friday, June 25, 2010:
Beginning bright and early at 8AM the Autocross will be held at the nearby Harry Grove Stadium. The autocross will be followed by a TSD Beginner’s Rally, which will depart from the Stadium and end back at the convention hotel. Or, if Civil War History and a self-guided tour seem more your style, our Battlefields Tour will allow you to visit such important nearby sites as Antietam, Gettysburg, and Harper’s Ferry. Take as long or as short a tour as you wish! Later on, a relaxed and fun-filled Tire-Kickin’ Swap Meet and Cook-Out, complete with Music, Hot Dogs, Burgers and Beverages will be the place you’ll want to be! This fun event will be held in the large AROC convention parking lot - weather permitting – so bring your parts and musical instruments! If you have always wanted to see the Capital’s monuments at night, we have just the tour for you! A Monuments at Night Bus Tour will leave the hotel at 7PM bound for Washington DC. The bus will get participants back to the hotel by about midnight.

Saturday, June 26, 2010:
Saturday is the day to see all the fantastic cars spanning the entire history of Alfa! The Alfa Century Concorso begins at 9AM at the Stone Manor Country Club, about 12 miles from the hotel. There, besides seeing all the great Alfas, you can take the opportunity to have some lunch and attend one or more of the Technical Seminars being held in Stone Manor House. Also inside this wonderful old stone manor home, the judging will be held for the Art Concorso and Model Car Concorso. Later, our Gimmick Rally participants will depart from Stone Manor and drive several miles through the Maryland hills answering questions and collecting clues, and ending up back at the convention hotel in time to get cleaned up and ready for dinner. Speaking of dinner, this is the night we all gather in the hotel’s ballroom for our Alfa Romeo Centennial AROC Banquet. This sit-down meal will include a short speech from our special guest, the awarding of several door prizes and a few words from your AROC Board and Convention Staff. We hope to be done before 10PM, so that we can all get back to our usual AROC socializing!

Sunday, June 27, 2010:
For anyone wishing to have your car photographed near the sites at the nation’s capital, don’t miss Sunday’s Early Bird DC Monument Driving and Photo Tour! This tour will leave from the hotel at 7AM and return in time for the Awards Brunch. Our final event will be the Awards Brunch, which will begin at 11AM on Sunday in the hotel’s ballroom. There, the prizes for the Time Trials, Autocross, TSD and Gimmick Rally, as well as the Art, Model Car and Alfa Concorso will be awarded, and we will close the convention and begin the second hundred years of Alfa Romeo!

Stay tuned to Alfa Owner magazine, your local newsletter and the Capital Chapter’s website at Alfa Romeo News | The Official Website of the Capital Chapter Alfa Romeo Owners Club for regular updates regarding the convention and centennial celebrations. We hope to be ready with a website for early registrations beginning in January 2010. Looking forward to seeing you in Frederick!

2- on the 1st of July (difficult for these to celebrate at a convention with the 4th of July rule)

I'm glad you all have so many birthdays which fall around the time of the convention.

In any event, are you letting us know so that we can recommend cake bakeries in Baltimore - home of 'The Ace of Cakes', or do you all want gifts ready for you when you arrive in Frederick next year?

Enrique, for YOUR Birthday, our team has organized an entire Concorso in your honor!

Gordy, I'm sorry we will be missing Jessica on her birthday...instead, I will send you home with a few special goodies for her, OK?

Cheryl, I'm sorry but none of the other unidentified birthdays actually occur during the convention dates (22 June/ 1 July). I'm afraid I'm at a loss regarding being of any possible assistance to you.

Now, does anyone have any 'non-birthday' comments?

Gordy, no worries! You didn't need to delete anything. I was just hoping my post might help to bring things back into focus a bit.

Alex-
I'll be there. But as will be true of so many other of the attendees, I will be a year older (but perhaps no wiser).
