Windscreen mounting in series 1TI

Maybe someone can shed some light on how the series 1 windscreen fits to the car.

When I bought the car the windscreen was held in by a rubber surround with a plastic insert like the slightly later models , the man I bought it off gave me the original chrome surround and quite a few new mounting clips to go with it, he said he never got around to fitting it.

Now before I get someone to remove the screen I need to know if I need a new rubber or not. I read somewhere that series 1 screens were glued or bonded in place, is this true? or if I need a series 1 windscreen rubber what are the chances of finding one, A guy called Enri had one for sale a while back but I didn't buy it, maybe I should have.

Any help much appreciated.

The really early suds had glued in screens, but they had trouble getting them totally sealed so then reverted to using a rubber seal. You have the rubber seal and given that it is in good shape, it can go back in. The seal can have a bead of sealant applied to it for a more water tight fit.

The stainless steel trim can be pushed back into the groove in the seal after the seal and screen is back on the car, this tightens up th seal and makes a better fit. Impossible to get the seal and screen on the car if the trim is fitted first.

The stainless trim you have you mention several mounting clips, this sounds a lot like the trim that belongs to the glued in type of screen.

The rubber seals (fromt and rear) with the trim inserts are nearly as rare as hens teeth, but in europe you may still get lucky.

Im sure Enri will chime in with his expereinces...

Thanks for the info.

I am hoping to put it back in without the current rubber surround as it projects quite a bit onto the a pillars. I think it looks much nicer when you just see the chrome surround, I will try and get a look at another series 1 close up, the guy I bought my series 3 QV from has one with the original chrome surround. Maybe with modern windscreen sealents it can be made to seal properly. Do you know if the actual windscreen was the same size for all models.....jeez sorry about all the questions

PS I have seen pictures of your Ti, looks like it's going to be one hell of a nice Sud when finished, hows it coming along.

Yes its true, like most cars the bonded windcreen formed part of the structual integrity of the the Alfasud, but due to quality controll issues at the factory in the mid 1970's they changes to a rubber mould with chrome trim.

The original bonded screen used a flat approx 20mm wide s/s trim held on with clips.
The later rubber mould had a 15mm wide s/s "t" trim held in by the rubber mould, and, like 77SudTi said, can only be removed if the screen is removed first.

Sudsonic,
- if you have the "t" trim you have to make sure your rubber mould has the split and recess in it.
- if you have the "clip on" trim get a competent fitter to glue the screen in. I think it looks more classic, and is stronger this way

all screens are the same size, but the tint!

windscreen removal and refitting

Windscreen replacement...

window sealant

Thanks for that info Enri, it is very helpful.

I looked at my chrome trim and it seems to be about 20mm wide, I also was given clips with it so I reckon it must be the glue in screen allright, it's a relief to realize I'm not missing anything as it's the only non original part on the car. A previous owner must have had a leak issue and put in the rubber seal instead, luckily he passed on the chrome one to the guy I bought it from.

I will try and put some pics up at the weekend .

Only issue I will then have is how to tidy up the edge of the roof lining where the rubber trim is wrapped around it at the top of the screen, do you know if there was ever an interior trim for this. my rear window has the original chrome trim but there seems to be a rubber trim on the inside.

Some pictures of the surround now in the car..and the chrome original one I have to put back in. And the third pic is of the matching chrome surround on the rear screen.

Does my chrome surround look like the one that doesn't need the rubber ? I have clips for it also.

That looks like the correct trim for the glued in screen.
