Alfa 33 Carbies
Good evening all alfa car nuts!
My Name is Tim I live in Australia. Recently i had a alfa 33 1.7 ie 8 valve, and it was written off by some nice lady in a 4x4. Be that as it may, I have recently purchased another 33.
This 33 has me a bit bluffed, because the previous owner said it was a 1.7 8 valve carbie, but when i drove it home, it felt quite like a 1.5. The car is a series two, and all i have managed to find is that on the inside throat of the carbies, it has 32 marked on it. I think it means 32 mm so would there be anyone out there who would be able to shed some light on the situation?

Further More on the previous Comments, I have been doing some research on this topic, It turns out that with 1.7 carbies, if they are a 40mm carbie, they have a 36 stamped on the inside, so would that mean that the 38 mm carbie would have a 32 on the inside?
As i understand it, the 1.7's come out in either 38 or 40 mm carbies, so like i said if anyone could shed some light, it would be much appreciated!

the engine number will tell you for sure, a 1.7 should have an engine number starting with 305.50 for a carby version and 305.58 for an injected version, engine number is located on back drivers side of block just behind carby.

The number of the carbs are on the outside according with the type , like DRLA.
Also , the covers of the heads in the 1.5 have the name Alfaromeo on them, 1.7 did nt because of the hydraylic tappets...

sorry boys the 32 stamped inside the venturi means you have a set of 36mm IDF from the earlier 1.5 33's, someone has swapped them along the way.

Believe me i'd like to get my money back, but unfortunately i wouldnt be able to even if i wanted to. I live in Brisbane, and i drove the car back From Sydney. The reason I have been asking about whether or not it was a 1.5 or 1.7 is the gearbox has **** itself when i went to take the car out to get a roadworthy. Funnily enough the bloke i bought this car wont reply to my emails or to my phone calls.
Either way, I had paid $1200 for the car, and the car is in almost perfect nick, so im not too worried. From what i hear, there is some bloke down in NSW who does the 1.7 carbie motors up and sells em, would there be anyone with any knowledge on this?
The other car i own, is a series one, 33 with a 16v motor dropped into it. Does anyone know of any mods that could be done to it, to make it go any harder, I have ordered a SQUADRA chip for it, but i am looking to other mods to make it go a little quicker.
Thanks again
Tim

You really need to look at the engine number, its on a plate (flat piece of cast block) by the starter motor at the back of the block.

There are a few good people around Brisbane that can build boxer engines to any level that you have the money to pay for. I have a spare 1.7 gearbox if you need one. My suggestion would be to upgrade the brakes before you get to carried away with the engine mods. Especially if you only have series 1 brakes, get some series 3, vented brakes and performance pads.
Regards...Bob

Bob with this car, it already had the series 3 brakes on it when i bought it, I Have got some new pads ready to put into the little car and get it through road worthy. Who in Brisbane could i take the car to? Everywhere i go, Gun Performance etc seem to laugh at me when i take the car there. I really dont know where to take it.
The car has a 1.5 ltr gearbox coupled with its 16v motor, i would imagine it would give it a bit more acceleration, but lack the top speed it once had, Would there be anyproblem you could see with this?
Thanks
Tim M

m8 i'm a bit confused, you say "The car has a 1.5 ltr gearbox coupled with its 16v motor", yet you think it's a 1.5, what's the engine number? If it is a 16v I will swap it free of charge for my 8v 1.7 if you wish . Here in WA I have come across half a dozen 1.7's at breakers that have 1.5's in them as they are far more common, you really need to look at engine numbers before buying.

To quickly see if its a real 1.7, look on the top of the engine block for an 84 or an 87 cast in the metal. If you see an 87 thats 87mm bore = 1.7
Good luck !

Mate, sorry i should have clarified. The car that posed the original question: if it was a 1.7 or 1.5, that has been solved.
With that car, i bought it sight unseen, the reason for this was because i live in brisbane, and the car was in sydney. I drove the car back from sydney no real problems, but once i got the car back, i went to take it out to get a road worthy, and the gearbox **** itself.
The other car i have, is a series 1 33 with a 16v motor in it, which has a 1.5 ltr gearbox in it. I have been trying to get it some mods to make it go faster, i have already done suspension, brakes, and all sorts of vaccum hoses and the like, and all thats really left is the motor. The car is going to be a road registered car, but i want it to be a bloody quick one. As it stands at the moment, My old 33 would blitz most people on my usual sunday drive, and there is a guy who lives up the road from me with a little gray 33 1.7 ie, and we usually have a bit of a play. But i hope with this new car, it should be a little missile.
Thanks again
Tim
