Header heat wrap

Has anybody done this to there headers? Aside from the obvious heat sheilding effects is there any other benifet in doing it? ive heard people say it helps improve gas flow...is this crap? would you notice any difference?

If you keep the heat in the gas the manifold lengths will theoretically need to be changed... But If you haven't optimized the thing from the start I wouldn't lose any slep over it.
RUST! The manifold will rust under the wrapping and the higher temps can cause it to crack.

I wouldn't wrap the mainfold on a car without serious heat problems.

It'd be much better to clean them up & have them ceramic coated inside & out, as the heat is kept inside, it won't rust & won't crack.

More expensive, but much better than heat wrap.

I wouldn't bother too much with the heat-wrap...it's not worth the effort unless the car is seriously "non-standard".

You could always go with a set of Iresa or CSC headers if you're looking for more power through the exhaust !!

Sorry..but my link to IRESA had died...they're a Spanish company who specialise in some pretty funky exhausts...

I think it stands for "INTERNATIONAL RACING ENGINEERING S.A"

Don't seem to be able to link to CSC either but are Italian and like Iresa you're unlikely to find them in Oz.

You can bet that they're both EXPENSIVE !!!

If you're looking for more horsepower throught the exhause your best bet is to ditch the airbox and replace it with some pretty good filters and half radius pipes: K&N for road use as they are better at cleaning or Pipercross/ITG for racing as the flow rate is better (as both breath radially)..

...retain the standard manifold...it's not that bad...and have a well though out 2" rear section made for you.....

...this little lot should give you about 8-10bhp

Thanks for that I might go the route of some k&n filters however ive read some things on other forums that the standard dual collector box works better (plus its allot easier to make acold air intake for). I ditched the factory muffler and have a nice supersprint twin pipe (which sounds great ) what your saying about the centre section makes allot of sense - it seems really restrictive - and has about 3 45 degrea bends in it...

I should explain....I've ditched the airbox in favour of the filters (100mm) and radius pipes because my Sud is a racing car....or at least wants to be !!!

....to accommodate the cold air induction I've removed the inner headlights and replaced them with mesh !! The space for the inner lights sits right in-front of the filters and now creats a forced induction effect.

I'm considering running an internally baffled airbox which incorporates the carbs and filters...by running induction pipes from the inner headlight position and including baffles to negate the turbulence I'm thinking I can get a lot more good air in there !!

My exhaust has also been redesigned...it no longer includes the 45 degree bends and exits between the drivers door and the rear wheel-arch ...sounds a bit wild though !! ...eventually I'm going to hunt down an Iresa crossover manifold, but it could be a while

damb that sounds cool - id love to see some pictures ! I thought of doing something like that with my air box later on - i just need to learn how to weld aluminium! so do you run the standard manifold atm? was the strait section a worthwile improvement?

I'm not too keen on using an alloy airbox...a friend works with some pretty funky materials..titanium, carbon fibre and kevlar, so I may get something just a little different

I'm also in the process of fabricating a dirty great spoiler for the front end which my mate insists would be more effective with a front splitter made of carbon fibre rather than alloy !!

If I ever get round to finishing it I'll post some pix...at the moment though she's not that photogenic ! I started out (three years ago!) with basically a standard Ti with a race motor....I've been tinkering with it since then (I call it research, but my other half doesn't understand ) I've only recently taken the decision to "get serious".....
