What is this '91 16V worth??
Hey guys,
Happy New Year to you all!!
Just wanting to get a few opinions on the price of a 33 16V.
The car in question has had 2 owners since new, is a 16V S (sunroof) 185,000kms on the clock, good interior no tears in the seats etc. Good overall condition of the body, been touched up here and there over the years so isn't perfect but pretty straight, front bumper needs attention on the drivers side as its hanging a bit low, drivers side mirror has been knocked by a passing truck, aircon needs a re gas etc..all pretty straight forward to fix, just need the time.
Engine pulls well and has the usual 2nd gear gremlin and the brakes are what I would call disappointing so need some money spent to be brought back up to speed. Car also has a full and pretty comprehensive service history.
The current owner is sitting at $6900 but I'm erring toward the $5000 to $5500 given it needs a bit of attention in a few areas.
Does this sound reasonable for a 16V? I think $6900 is a bit much given the kms and list of problems.
any advice welcome.
Cheers, Josh.

$4500-$5500 tops!
I would expect a working aircon for nearly $7k, and why isn't it working?! As most 33 owners know the connections are very low to the ground and often get damaged by speed bumps, car park obstacles. If there is a hole in the system, then the dryer will also need to be replaced. All this adds up, there could easily be $500-$800 worth of work to put this right. If condensors are damaged then add another $500 each side. Botched copper brazing repairs don't work on factory units!
New mirror is probably $200 + paint (ebay for cheaper I guess). Sagging bumper, hopefully an easy fix, but if a mount is broken its out with the welder.
I wouldn't be paying more than $5k IMO.
In contrast, I paid $3500 for mine, and I've put another $3500 into it since I've owned it and I'm still not driving it!

i just bought a p4 (just found fatigue cracks in the floor see separate thread)
nevertheless i paid 5500 for it it has no rust very straight body and reasonable interior
cam belts have just been done new tires and good sound system.
generally i am reasonably happy as everything works so the price compared to others i have seen seems ok

Yes but yours is a P4 - much rarer and arguably more desirable.
Congratulations on your purchase

Well, I paid $2000 for a '91 16v about 6 months back, about 190,000km. Engine has some "issues" (extremely sensitive throttle, surging and sometimes incredibly rough idle) but pulls like a demon once over 2000rpm. Got the cracked seat mounts, and front chassis rails immediately in front/below the strut towers. On the plus side, I know for sure the engine internals are immaculate, having assisted with a tear-down and rebuild about a year before I bought it, so Im confident most of the issues are to do with the ECU.
On another note, I've seen a couple of P4's going for around the $7k mark

come on guys are u 4 real?
16v 33s are getting very rare.
Saying all that about them is like putting them down.
If i had to sell mine, I wouldn't for less than $8k, even so its not that "perfect".
If you had to wreck it, you wouldn't think twice about the price, 'cos you know that you have made more than $20k on it just on parts.
Thank you!

around the 5K mark is about what people are prepared to pay these days I think. P4's still command around 8K, hopefully have one in my collection some day!

What was the cost of a new 33 16v back in the day? I remember seeing a figure around the $35k(aus) mark. What other car could you get with 16 valves and individual throttle bodies in 1991? Only the original BMW M3 comes to my mind...

This might seem obvious, but if we could see some pictures of it, we might be able to give a more informed opinion!

If only that were true... I would be buying every one available
Realistically the only part people will pay good money for is the engine.

All over, my mate bought another one for $4300, 99,000 kms, Red, sunroof, turns out it has rust in the front end at the base of the strut towers (ex snow car!!! Always check the spare wheel too!!) that he didnt know about until I saw it after he'd paid for it. Tried to take it back to the owners as its unsafe, but they wouldn't hear of it (long story - PO claims not to have known of the issues - that doesn't sit well with me)
So now we have a strip down job and rebuild, depending on how deep the rust goes, or else its scrap and sell the good parts.
So you can buy a 16V for around $5K but be careful, and take at least TWO experts along to check it out thoroughly!
Should have bought the one mentioned first here, might have been pricey, but it was honest, and this one will probably cost the same after the repairs if they go ahead....
Cheers, Josh.
