ticking noise..help please

hi i recently finished my 33 1.7ie..the engine was great it had around 100 000 km on it...but yesterday i pushed the engine to 6000 revs in 1,2,3 gear and after that i heard ticking noise that gets faster vith revs it"s not that loud but you can certanly hear it... what could it be???and what is the normal temperature cause in normal driving i cant get my engine past 60 celsius??? is that ok??

Hi,

NEVER EVER push hard the motor if it hasn't reached the normal temperature... Revving hard a cold motor is a very nice way to end its life.

Now the normal temp for a IE boxer engine is around 82-85 C. I think it is high time you had the thermostat replaced.

Regarding the noise: is the tone of the noise a metal one? can you isolate it and determine where it comes from?
If the noise advances with the revs then for sure it has to do with a moving part. Can be a failing water pump, a worn alternator/tensioner bearing or a worse case scenario like a big end bearing...

Is your car a 16V or an 8V? Does it have hydraulic tappets? If so, Id say the noise is an empty hydraulic tappet, sometimes the oil gets squeezed out at higher rpms and they get a bit clattery. It should go away after a while. Actually turning off the engine for a time can fix the noise, as residual pressure in the oil galleries makes its way into the tappet. If it doesnt go away or gets louder as oil temp increases it could be a defective tappet (I had a few so replaced all of them) But another trick before then is to do an oil change, sometimes fresh oil helps with noises.

it s not that metal sound it s like... tick tick tick and with engine cold it s ok but when it heats up a litle then it is louder....yeah i think that thermostat is going to be replaced...i will tray with new oil and see what will hapen

Hi,

I had a case not a long ago when the right side tensioner was making knocking sounds only when the motor was hot. The knocking sound was appearing under start-stop traffic when the motor was getting really hot and the vent kicking in after several times.

Proved to be a failing tensioner bearing...

My serie 3 33 with a 1.3 carbies does the ticking sound too when on 3'rd gear above 5000 revs, the sund come from somewhere under the gear lever, i think there is something loose and with vibrations...
about the temperature, my car takes a bit of time to come at 80, sometimes idt doesn't even get there, when i drive the car normal it stays at 60/70. it bothers me because before reaching 80 the idle is not stable and the car shakes a lot hehe :S

hey, i was wonderong if you had found the cause??? my sprint does the same thing after i had the throttle jamb wide open mid gear change. i was thinking maybe cracked ring??

My 86 Sprint 1.5 does the same thing but only when its a hot day and I'm sitting in a lot of traffic. If I turn it off for a couple of minutes the ticking goes away when I start it up again. I've just had the valve clearances checked and shimmed so it can't be that. Its sounds like its coming from near the left hand head. Is there any way of checking if its a tensioner without replacing it? I had the belts done about 5000kms ago.

My 33 1.5 twin card makes a ticking sound because one of the cam boxes needs replacing, the other has been done and it dosent do it atm..so it could be a cam box problem, if the noise seems to be running at 1/4 of engine speed it probly is cam/valve/cylinder related...

to isolate the problem use a peice of heater pipe 1" dia to listen to parts of the motor like a stetho scope to hear that part of the engine only.

Ticking sound could also be caused by loose exhaust manifold nuts or a partially blown out manifold gasket.

I have the same noise but funnily enough the noise is prominent when the engine is cold. After about 15-20 mins of running the noise goes away. The noise is louder when accelerating in gear than when in neutral.

I had ticking noises in my 33 that got worse as the car warmed up, tried oil changes and additives with no result, had started planning for a lifter change when I discovered cracks in my headers about 25mm after the heads, out with the mig and problem solved.
