Broken Panhard rod mount 33

Well i've worked out why the left rear tyre was rubbing on the inner guard during hard right hand cornering... i had originally suspected the bushes in the rod were so worn that the axle was able to move to the right, but under closer inspection , the mount on the chassis has broken away from the car

3 days until the start of the race season and the car is well and truly broken.

Will definitely have to bribe my panel shop into fitting me in.

Has anyone else had this happen? might be worth checking out if you drive your car hard!

only time i saw this was on a crashed 33 where the car had slip sideways into a curb or something, and the mount wasn't really broken just bent, but seriously weakened, could this have happened to yours?
Perhaps it would be best to weld up the mount and then strengthen it with some plates, then its sure never to move.

Yep! happened to me, but i got to mine while it was only a crack but yea they do crack and break. The only reason they break is because it is the ony point on the rear that takes the stress of left to right forces and some other forces too. I welded mine up then seam welded it on the car and also i heve a boot brace bar that links up to that mount (not really neccessary) but i have a bulk stiff rear end with nolathanes so its the weakest point well was hehe.
also you could brace it by welding two pieces of steel plate to the middle of the car in that section, which then go to either side of the bolt on the panhard mount. This will stop it for sure.

Hey Brent, hope you can get that 33 welded up for Saturday, we need a good field of Alfas at Pukekohe. Don't want the BMWs showing us up !! :-)

well, it's all done and by the sound of it, it wasn't an easy job. All of the brake lines, fuel lines, and fuel filler go either over, or through this bracket. I've had an extra plate welded in too, so it should withstand anything i throw at it. It is reassuring to know that the rear end of the car will now stay in contact with the front

Just a coolant change, brake bleed, and we'll be ready for racing tomorrow morning. WOOHOO can't wait!!

I'm not sure about the panhard mount, but my brothers panhard road snapped in his p4 a while back. He bought another panhard rod for about ~$500 bucks, and welded the old one until it arrived. But the welds are still strong.

I think they are a different item on the 16v though as I was pretty sure the panhard rod was a p4 unique item.

This happened on my Sportwagen (about 10years ago), just pulled all the bracket spotwelds out of the chassis, no accidents, but the car had done about 250,000miles. The cause I believe was too much driving over so called "sleeping policemen". I had many Suds and 33's and I never had it happen on any other. This Sportwagen did a lot of towing. We run 75's, 33 - 16v, and others.
