The production of the Alfasud was between 1971 and 1984.
The Alfasud was a major landmark in the history of Alfa Romeo in Europe, Italy's State-owned car manufacturer. Not only did it bring desperately needed employment to the impoverished area around Naples (south Italy), where a purpose built factory was built for the assembly of the new car, but the Alfasud took Alfa Romeo into an important new market (one for so long dominated by Fiat).
This car was the first Alfa with a flat four cylinder engine (boxer)and front wheel drive.
In 1976 the Alfasud Sprint was introduced. This shared the same floorpan and mechanicals as the saloons, but had a new coupe body (two doors plus hatchback, also designed by Giugiaro). The Sprint continued on until 1989.
(production 1976 -1989)
The replacement of the Alfasud, the 33, used almost identical mechanical parts with a new, more modern body designed by Pininfarina. Available only with five doors, the only body variant was the SportWagon, a 'lifestyle' estate body, no three door 33 or coupe ever being built.
The production was between 1983 and 1992, with the 16V Quadrifoglio Verde (Green Cloverleaf), later it was introduced even a four wheel drive version, firstly named Permanent 4 and then, in May '92, Q4.
