How about a whole Alfasud body NEW OLD STOCK!!! A local parts dealer (probably the largest in Athens) has one in the original factory primer, as well as a 4-door Alfetta one, from the days when importing whole bodies for parts was allowed. These items are shown in Alfa parts books as 'Scocca Grezza'.
If you are interested, call and ask for Mrs. Sofia Paouri (she owns the place) in ++30-210-9215744. They also have TONS of NOS parts for Suds as well as all other regular Alfa parts.

I've just seen your website Alfasud 1972. Very good stuff! Where on earth did you find the blue 1973 car? That will be Possilipo blue, I know because I had a blue '73 4 speed 1200 like that. In fact mine was the first one registered in Britain (August 1st 1973), chassis number 5051714, engine number 301000046458. I also had a green '73 Sud which was 5051711/301000047019.
The first one I ever had was a 1977 1200Ti in black.

I started off with Alfa in around 1983 when I had my first ever job at an Alfa dealer. Back then Alfasuds had just left production replaced by the Alfa 33 which was okay but not the same car as the Sud. Even then Suds had a terrible reputation for rust but to be fair, other Alfas like the Giulietta and GTV Coupes were just as bad. In these days you could still find cheap Suds from the late seventies (with rust) but most of the original 1973/4 cars were gone. For example, chassis 5051714 lasted just five years before it was taken off the road, 5051711 was taken off the road in 1977! All due to the rust - unbelieveable.
The best Sud I had (I had about 10-12) was probably a 1300Ti from 1978, one of the last Series 1 cars in Capodimonte Bianco (white!). Although it was tatty, it went like hell and I could cover the 70 miles to work in exactly 1 hour - town centre, motorway, lots of roundabouts and another town centre.

I can still remember how to adjust the front calipers, change cambelts with the small notch in the cam carriers, both easy jobs - and the worst job of all, the handbrake cable. But it was all worth it. Compared to the Sud the old 105 cars felt like something pre war.

Looking back I have to say that the Alfasud was one of the few cars I owned that I really enjoyed driving. Such a shame they have all rusted away now - there are almost none left in the U.K and I have not seen one for years.

Hello Sudmeister,

Thank you for your great story ! My blue 1973 one comes from Italy like most of my Alfasuds. They are still to be found quite cheaply as long if you by them 'on the street' instead of from classic car dealers or re-sellers. The prices differ hugely between private sellers and car dealers, you can be an excellent Alfasud second series (1975-1980) for under 500 euro if you buy them privately. First series are also in the same price range if you are able to find one....They are quite rare. So called 'Italian classic car dealers' are asking very high prices for exactly the same cars, they asking foreign buyers something like 1500 to 3500 euro for Alfasud's they buy very cheaply. Sometimes those Alfasud's are even given to them for free.

In Italy there are a whole lot of re-sellers also, these people try to sell cars that don't even belong to them. Even the bigger Italian classic car sellers work this way. They see a car on the street, make pictures of them and put them on the internet or magazines for a lot of money, only after they find a potential buyer then they try to find the owner of the car and try to have them sold (or given) to them them very cheapely. This happens a whole lot. If you get an car offered from Italy with the license plates covered it is mostly from such kind of re-seller. So now I don't have to tell you anymore it is better to look for a car in Italy yourself than to buy from a car dealer or re-seller, you will save yourself a whole lot of money.

Was the license plate of your one of the TAN numbers? Tan42M and TAN43M where test cars that made it into the period English magazines, I believe TAN43M was red.

There are a couple of first series 4-door Sud's in England but it is hard to find their owners, on is a light blue (Blu Procida) one from 1974. The other is a 1975 one the was for sale in England last your and was sold to Ireland. That one was dark blue (Blu Possilipo). I also heard a 1973 one has survived also but still have not located the owner.

For some srtrange reason it is hard for me to get Alfasud information from England, the former Sud register man is not much of a speaker, the man who runs the Register now is not returning my e-mails and is otherwise impossible to find. The AROC is not much of helping me and the forum of the AROC is blocked from non paying AROC members (which I feel is a bad thing, that kind of internet information needs to be shared freely).

Do you have pictures of the Alfasud's that you have had? I would really love to see those if that is possible. If you are able to please send them to alfasud1972@mac.com

Kind regards,

Rody

Indeed - the green car was TAN41M, the blue car TAN42M.
TAN43M was an 1800 Alfetta saloon but TAN44M was indeed a red car. This car was scrapped but I aquired the registration number for a 1979 Alfasud 1500 belonging to an old Girlfriend from around 10 years ago. I don't think it exists now, not seen her or the car for many years!

TAN41M is probably long gone now, but TAN42M does exist although in a poor condition - it does still run. It is in a barn awaiting restoration - I saw it around 8-9 months ago and almost decided to buy it back.

I think the blue 1974 car in the UK is TOT813M. It was restored by it's one and only owner who lived in West Wales. I saw it at the AROC national day about 6 years ago and it looked very good. It was a light purply/mauve colour with red trim. I would buy this if I could find the owner!

Whgen I was a member of the AROC (UK) the Sud registrar was a guy called Andrew Glover who lived near Silverstone. He was replaced by someone rather less helpful whose name escapes me. When I told him I owned TAN42M he actually called me a liar! Unreal. I didn't bother with them again after that.

The last time I saw an Alfasud on the road was in Germany. At the time (around 2 years ago) I had a BMW 840Ci and as I arrived at the OGP (OldTimer GrandPrix) at the Nurburgring, I saw a red 1300Ti Series 1 parked by the side of the road. I stopped, took a few pics of it, and the owner was puzzled why someone owning a 50'000 Euro BMW was interested in an old Sud :-)

I told him - it's not just about speed! The only BMW I ever had that was as good to drive around twisty roads as a Sud was the original M3 E30. That was a very special and expensive car, the Alfasud was cheap and Alfa made thousands and thousands yet it was much better to drive than any ordinary 3 Series made between 75 and '83.

Every other car felt very boring and ordinary after driving a Sud. What a pity Alfa Romeo pretend it never existed!

Wow, those are great stories ! I will send you a PM with some questions that I have. Are you in the market for an early car? I might know of a 1973 one that is going to be for sale in Germany very soon, not cheap I think, but it looks realy original.

I just checked something because I thought the chassis number of your green car looked kind of familiar to me. My white 1973 car has chassis number AS*5051336*901A this is very close to your old car above, only 375 numbers apart.

They where either build on the same day or yours was build one day later if the chassis number are in line with build dates which is not always the case. I assume your green car was a right-hand drive? My car is a left-hand drive.

Kind regards,

Rody

I know Graham Heels ran the register for a while. He was stated on the AROC website (and magazine articles) for quite a long time. Currently Colin Metcalfe is supposed to run the UK register but I have not been able to locate/contact him.

Kind regards,

Hi Rody

I enjoy looking at your website now and again. I have two suds myself - a 1983 1.3Ti (S3) and a 1978 1.3Ti (S1) and a 1981 Alfasud sprint. I don't know the chassis numbers though.
I was deligted with my most recent purchase my series 1 sud (see link) I bought it from Richard Bremner in London. He is the editor of Autocar magazine and was a writer for CAR magazine back in the late 80's early 90's.
I know its a bit expensive - I got it for €4,400 but as I don't have much skills or time to do them up myself I have to pay for someone else to do the work so its cheaper for me to buy good suds in the first place.

http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/...php?carno=6354

I will be joining the AROC soon and will keep an eye out for any stuff you are looking for.

Cheers
AR.
