Alfasud in Australia

Hi Rody,

I was reading through your thread, you know a lot about Alfasuds. I thought I would write a quick note about mine. I live in Adelaide South Australia, and I have a series 1 Alfasud from 1977, chassis # AS*5467835*901C. The car was originally a bright green colour (forget what its called now), but when we bought it it was painted red. I used to drive it to school when i first learned to drive, I have always thought it was a fantastic car, and I would choose to drive it over anything else, even my parents modern cars. It was first bought by my brother because he used to walk past it on his way to work every week when it was for sale, he wanted to learn to drive in it, but i got my liscence before he did and I began driving it. I instantly fell in love with it, it was such a blast! In those days I didnt know much about the car or how to work on it (I was young and foolish) and the hardest job to do was to replace the handbrake cable and the waterpump that was rusted in!! With the help of a Haynes Manual I gradually learned how to fix things and keep it on the road (Perhaps i should have been studying for exams instead...) I used to live in the Adelaide hills, so driving was such a pleasure on the windy roads, i dont think i can recall driving a car that felt so responsive. It did have very stiff springs and Bilstein shocks though, bit of a bone shaker but fun none the less.
Eventually due to my mechanical inexperience i failed to realise that the cooling fan was wired up backwards and on a very hot afternoon in summer the head gasket blew with a huge plume of steam in my rear view mirror!! I was so upset!! I stopped driving it immediately and the car was stored for a few months.
I then had holidays and decided to tackle a restoration of the whole car, at first it was just going to be an engine rebuild and a rust fix up...well 5 years later here I am, and its still not finished!!
I got to know local Ferrari/Alfa Mechanic/do anything guy who taught me a heck of a lot about everything I needed to know to do a full restoration. We removed all the rust and fabricated new sections of metal, even replaced the whole roof so it would no longer have a sunroof (very poorly done in the first case and caused major rusting) I even learned lead loading so i could minimise the amount of plastic filler i had to use. Recently I got hold of some new old stock parts from germany (New bootlid and front drivers side guard) and had them shipped home when i was there in december. I have painted the car myself (most of it now, only a few panels to go) and the result is a mirror finish from using Acrylic paint. I dont care what people say, Acrylic gives a better finish over two-pack paint and is so easy to work with. Just polish it like mad and its beautiful! I also made myself a new head liner recently which looks really nice, i decided to make it black though instead of white like the original.
Underneath the car has been resealed and all the suspension components I sandblasted and resprayed black also all the fuel lines and brake lines I re made with a flaring kit and some spare time.
Currently Im re-setting door gaps by welding on metal to the ends of the doors to make a tighter fit, and will then spend many weeks making the panels straight with lead and some final touches of filler, its time consuming work but so rewarding, and when the weather gets warmer here i will paint them in AR530 (thats Alfa 75 red for those who dont know) I spent ages choosing the colour and after seeing a test piece on the car thought it looked right.
Im hoping to have the body of the car ready by the end of the year for final assembly, but still looking for a series 1 rear window rubber and stainless trim, cant find it anywhere!!
As for the engine the original 1200 engine that also came with the car as a spare when it was first bought is long gone now and was rooted, and the car was fitted with a single carb 1500cc motor from a later model, but still has the original gearbox (rebuilt by myself). The engine has been fixed up and is now in the car and runs beautifully, even test drove it as just a shell, drives how it should! But I have got hold of some original Autodelta engine parts from a Trofeo sud kit and im planning to build a hot motor with all of that eventually....first I will get it on the road!!

sorry its such a long post....

Josh.

Hi,

Congratulations - It is nice to hear people salvaging classic Alfas and doing a huge amount of personal work to keep them running. After all, the felling of personal creation is incomparable and pride comes when car is admired by everyone around! What I admire at Alfisti people is the fact that many of us used to have zero automotive knowledge and year by hear we become unbeatable gurus

It would be nice to see some of your work if it is photo documented.

You can check Bobbber's site at http://www.alfa-restoration.co.uk which is a place of documentation for boxer engined Alfas. I have contributed some articles there, and it would be nice to see Alfasud documentation enriching the canvas if you can afford it.

Regards from Athens,

Hello Sudmeister,

Maybe you are interested to know that I have bought a first series Alfasud from England, it was delivered to me last friday. It was first registered on 17-07-1975, it is one of the last 6000 first series Sud's made (901A series). Ofcourse it does have all the usual Alfasud rust but it is not to far gone. Below are a couple of pictures:

TAN43M was an 1800 Alfetta saloon but TAN44M was indeed a red car. This car was scrapped but I aquired the registration number for a 1979 Alfasud 1500 belonging to an old Girlfriend from around 10 years ago. I don't think it exists now, not seen her or the car for many years!

TAN41M is probably long gone now, but TAN42M does exist although in a poor condition - it does still run. It is in a barn awaiting restoration - I saw it around 8-9 months ago and almost decided to buy it back.

I think the blue 1974 car in the UK is TOT813M. It was restored by it's one and only owner who lived in West Wales. I saw it at the AROC national day about 6 years ago and it looked very good. It was a light purply/mauve colour with red trim. I would buy this if I could find the owner!

Whgen I was a member of the AROC (UK) the Sud registrar was a guy called Andrew Glover who lived near Silverstone. He was replaced by someone rather less helpful whose name escapes me. When I told him I owned TAN42M he actually called me a liar! Unreal. I didn't bother with them again after that.

Hello Enri,

Thank you for your reply. Do you mean front and rear screen surround for the the glued window version, and is it complete with the middle clips? (I am not searching for the rubber surround with chrome inlay, the not glued version). If so where are you located an what are you asking for it? (please send me an e-mail or personal message).

Well it is not that bad actually, the only real problem area is the windscreen surround. I have a couple of used panels from scrapped cars but the wiper holes are different compared to a righthand drive car. the rest of the body appears to be quite good, of course it does have some holes but nothing that scares me for now...
