Hello everyone

Iv'e resently brought a red 1983 alfasud ti (twincarb)
first and second synchros are stuffed, and i was wondering how much and how hard it would be to repair with the gearbox allready out of car.
Thanks all

welcome!
ahh the dreaded synchros! luckily the previous owner of my car (sprint) did this before i bought it - i have the prices here for you... i believe the gearboxes are very similair (just different ratios) so hopefully the prices should be reasonably close (the work was done in late 01)

gearbox gasket and seal set $35
4 synchro rings $240 (5th gear was fine)
gear selector bush $6 each
top gear box mount $55

obviously not all of this (or maybee more!?) will apply for your sud...
unfourtunately i cant break down the labour for you as allot of other things were done during this service. having the gear box allready out should certainly help the labour cost...

suds were all designed to run on leaded as far as i know (96 ron) so if you cant find that id run it on premium... as to whether you need an additive for the valve seats best to ask a mechanic... of the top of my head i think some models were ok on premium with a different ignition curve - others (prob earlyer models) needed an additive.

'fuel star systems' make a good lead replacement catalyst that is about 160$ that lets you run normal unleaded without additive... havnt tried it myself though...

cheers - lucas

"The Spare Place" in Adelaide is excellent. Leo and Vito are dedicated enthusiasts themselves, and they have just about any alfa/fiat/lancia part that can wear out. If you are looking for trim/lights/etc, ask! They might have it Usually a better chance than most other places.

Here in Italy we use a method to be used with worn syncros gearboxes. It is called "DOPPIETTA". I'll try to explain: when you want to pass from the third to the second gear you have to press the clutch, put the lever in the neutral position, bring the engine at suitable revs, and then press the clutch again and engage the second gear. It's only a workaround but doing so you can use your worn gearbox without crunching and (most important) without overhauling it! Mario

thanks for responding. I manage to change without it crunching when I'm potting around but this gearbox is for a race car and Id like to be able to do short sharp changes even though I only use second once or twice. The main reason im doing an overhaul is to get my head around it in case anything significant happens to it
cheers.

In english it's called "double clutching" or is it not?
I grew up with old VW Beetles with the unsyncronized tranny. It was a challenge not to crunch gears, but after a while I mastered.

Best regards

Hans
