The other significant thing about this 6C is that it has a longer tailgate with the hinges well into the roof. Would that be to get the engine and gearbox in, from the back downwards, as it clearly cannot go in from underneath? The gear change linkage is fairly roundabout too?

That's a point. I doubt if that box is even Alfa. It looks very similar to a De Tomaso Pantera box (but it isn't). It's not from a Tipo 33 either. I wonder if someone knows where it came from??

When i think of it. It looks alot like a rebuilt 116/162-series transaxle...

That would make sense seeing as it looks similiar to a Pantera box and that had a ZF transaxle.
Mechanics! What can I say... when it comes to something that needs a lot of head scratching, they tend to leave things for a 'spare moment'. PITA!!

Isn't that just a GTV6 drivetrain without the connecting driveshaft?

No, the Alfetta/GTV6 drivetrain is longer with the final drive positioned at the very back of the box. That is why using a GTV6 box not doable as the engine would have to sit too far forward.
In any case, doing a quick search across the web, I can safely say it is definately a ZF box although there is doubt over the 6C being a working prototype or just a mock build that didn't run.

Doubt it ... there would back then been hundreds of old F5000/F1 race cars with appropriate transaxles that would be nice and cheap. Now of course they have raised status as historic racers but back then just junk.

I assume you are talking about my old car, and yes last I heard it is now Toyota powered and a road car. Still painted exactly as it was when I raced it.
Personally much more interesting Sud powered because it was unique (I believe) and I do think it is a waste of all those race orientated components as a road car, but not my car anymore .
That was a good car.
