Red face rear axle woes - suspension, braking and wiggling

hmmmmm okay

I put a set of bilsteins in the back the other week - feels great on the track, but took her for a miserable 400km trip over easter - under throttle she feels rock solid, but as soon as i back off she wont hold a straight line, she has become a handful to drive on public roads. Easy solution: keep accelerating! errrr not exactly practical on a public road...

The bilsteins are rock hard on bump as well as rebound - would much prefer the softer bump that the konis offer but alas koni doesnt make shocks for the early (disc) rear axles any more, but they do for late (drum) axles. I dont want to lose my rear discs but i would like to do stuff with my shock absorbers. Im told that the discs wont fit if i try to swap them for the drums whilst using a late axle - im not even considering the handbrake issues at this stage (would like to lose the front handbrake at some stage so i can get some decent feel in the business end of the brakes)

Sure, handling requirements for track and road are different but i would like to enjoy my weekend drives in my beloved sudsprint as well as my monthly track days.

Hence here I am - picking the brains of people that know much more than I do...

Suggestions anyone?

Is the axle that different between the disc and drum setup? ... would the shock still fit (Koni that is), ie. just use it on the old axle? OR go to a Koni shop, they will adapt it for you. All Konis can be modified and adjusted to suit.

I made the same mistake with my Sud many years ago and replaced ALL bushes with those horrible (my opinion ) neoprene bushes and thus effectively locked up the rear suspension. The car was as nervous as afterwards ... but I was too distracted in other areas to change back.

On the track you want hard (spring rate) rear suspension ... but you still want movement ... Bilstein shocks have always been way too hard, unless you are into rallying.
