suspension parts - source & prices?
I'm sick & tired of the hair-raising handling of the 33 at the moment. Tried to pitch me under a truck on a straight bit of road last night
I'm gonna go over the front end & replace basicly every bush, the strut bearings, front shocks etc, but I can't find anyone who stocks them here in Australia...
Any ideas? Car is an '87 build, and has the KYB struts (though i'd like a set of koni's, i've heard the KYB units are different and aren't interchangeable?)

Turin Imports, The Spare Place etc...all in Adelaide tho.
Since yuour car is a 1987 version (serries 2) you have a small, but not very effective swaybar.....
The trick is to find a Serries 2 or 3 Alfa Romeo Sud sway bar and put it on (the whole crossmember) Its a nice thick bar They are quite cheap, just find a wrecked Sud...Np
Stange, I've never heard anybody complain too much about the 33's handeling except the serries 1 cars that have no front swaybar at all.....(I know its not as good as a Sud tho...)

The probem isn't the car's handling per se, more just the fact that it has a fair bit of wear/slop in it that makes it do alarming things from time to time (ie trying to steer itself into the side of the truck...)

Yikes! I can see why your worried.... How the hell did it "want" to do that? Power understeer, or did it just want to snap over (swap ends) going around a corner?

No, straight road. Had a little bit of a ridge in my lane I suspect, and the car tried to follow it. The weight of the steering tends to vary from time to time, and may decide to pull left or right for no reason... If you're being a little lax you get little warning of it happening...

Hmmm, check the rear trailing arm bushes. When these wear the rear axle moves around causing the car to wander ... infact even if the bolts are simply loose. Ask my engine builder ... he took my (old) car for a run once and had to use 2 lanes of the motorway at 125mph
When I drove it home I also found it wandered ... and loose rear suspension bolts were the cause.
Also most Sud racers remove the front roll bar in the hope that they will get a little more wheel travel and thus traction ... and they still straight line okay. Saying that my car had like 3+ degrees of negative camber and thus would follow any groove in the road, etc.

It doesn't really "wander" as such...
Imagine you're driving in a straight line & without you being able to see it, an unknown force grabs hold of the steering wheel & yanks it - HARD - Holds it 1/2 a turn to one side, then switches 1/2 a turn to the other, then maybe if you're lucky it'll let go.
Maybe that's the problem. Can anyone recomend an Exorcist?

Arh, ... well I have actually experienced just this ... maybe.
Let me explain.
A few years ago when I worked at an Alfa Romeo specialist during Uni break (in NZ) a Sud came in with a driveability issue. When I road tested the car it was perfect and I was just about to give up and go back to the boss and say WTF ??? ... when all of a sudden the steering wheel was wrenched out of my hand and went to full lock and I had to jump on the brakes. It was like the car was crazy ...
Well to cut a long story short ... the diff was fncked, teeth missing somewhere I think. We sold the young lady a second hand gearbox, if I remember right and problem solved.
Hope this is not your problem.
Pete

I had a very similar thing happen to me a couple of years ago when I had my beloved Mini...
...It turned out to be a problem with the wheelbearings sticking of all things
Hope this is of some use
Good luck
Mike

HI guys, newbie here.
I was wondering are the koni absorbers tuned to the standard Alfasud springs or can they be used with lowering springs?
Where is a good site to source of upgfrade suspension parts of Alfasud (like PU bushings and bigger anti roll bar)? Sites like justsuds.co.uk seem to stock replacment parts only.
My car is a 1983 Alfasud 1.5 Ti cloverleaf.
Thanks!

hello and welcome All Koni shocks are designed to be used as replacements for factory items are valved accordingly. whats good about konis is that on the sofftest they are standard - but you can adjust them accordingly - an excellent feature as they get older (and softer). with new shocks you should be able to use springs that are lowered up to 30mm with no problem. after 30mm you run the risk of hitting your bumpstops and playing havock with the ride quality - makes sense as shocks are designed to be progressive in their resistance so running em low and your ridding at the 'tough' end of their travel. if you want to go lower than 30mm you would need adjustable ride height shocks like blistein (are they the height adj ones?) i believe that justsuds sells lowering springs... cant think of anywere else that sells 'performance' gear...
btw i see you are in malaysia - are thyre many older alfas around?
cheers- lucas

Thanks Lucas.
where to order koni for alfasud? I downloaded the 2004/2005 Koni catalogue but don't see any applications for alfasud. Can't find bilstein too. It would be great if you can direct me to a site where I can order the absorbers.
On justsuds, I only see "koni inserts". Is that the whole damper?
Anyway, there are many classic alfas in malaysia. I just went on a 3-day grand tour (millie miglia) in a 1974 GTV 2000 Bertone.
