Giulia Super 1970 (1969 build) For Sale in Australia
I have a Giulia Super available for sale.
It was built in 1969 and sold in Australia in 1970.
It is an original Australian market right hand drive version.
It is fitted with the original 1600 engine which has been rebuilt with new pistons, liners and bearings.
All parts including seals and gaskets used were original boxed/bagged Alfa parts.
The engine is in standard spec with the standard 40mm webers and cams fitted.
It has Koni shocks and stiffer rear springs fitted.
It has the original oil filter type fitted but a machined aluminium adapter plate is waiting in the boot so that the later series 'spin on' filter can be used as the original canister 'insert' is I believe no longer available in Australia.
There is also an (unfitted) original factory supplied oil cooler adapter to enable the hosing for an oil cooler to be fitted.
I never did it though so it is unused.
It also has a genuine Alfa sump guard fitted and a small (removable) nudge bar fitted to the front.
Previously Cibee Oscars were fitted to an accessory rack on that nudge bar as I did a lot of long distance night time driving.
It has head restraint equipped seats
(same backrest and head restraint design as Alfetta 1.8)
It has non standard inertia reel seat belts fitted to the front for reasons of safety.
It also has a sympathetically installed Bose sound system.
If someone wanted to remove it and refit the original radio cut out cover plate on the dash it would not be effected in anyway by my installation.
I still have the original plate but access is difficult as it is in storage elsewhere.
The bose amplifier unit is discreetly under-slung to the right of the steering wheel and is out of sight. None of the dash was chopped or 'cut up' in any way.
All stainless 'bright-work' is in very good condition aside from a very small dent (maybe 15-20mm diameter) in the front bumper adjacent to the RH side overrider.
Some idiot backed into it and then took off after suggesting they were unaware they had done it.
Other than for that I recall no blemishes or damage to the body, glass or bright-work.
It has a new laminated front windscreen fitted.
All the other glass is all original from new and in good condition.
The door, boot (trunk) and bonnet rubbers were replace years ago and are still in good order as far as I know.
The boot (trunk) floor and side mats are all present and intact.
The original jack is in the car.
I have the tool kit but it is not with the car (they were complete rubbish).
It is in storage elsewhere with some other Giulia odds and ends.
The trim is in 'as new' condition but the original headlining has some small and very mild areas of discolouration around the margins. (I think this is from the factory applied glue effecting the vinyl)
I never removed it when I did the the strip down as it was in perfect condition at that time and there was no need to do so.
The carpets are the original factory fitted issue and in very good condition.
They have always been protected with covering floor mats so they have survived the years intact.
The underbody and internal body cavities were comprehensively fish-oiled when the car was stripped down and the doors, guards and any subsequent repair areas have been similarly treated or retreated in subsequent refurbs.
I have been outside australia for most of the previous 4-5 years and the vehicle has been in storage for an extended time.
It is on blocks in a dry well ventilated commercial storage facility with oil in the sump, the battery removed and the cooling system drained and the cooling system air dried.
It has had one previous major restoration with a strip down to bare metal and two less serious refurbishments.
It is re-painted the original white colour and has a black interior.
It is the model with five stainless horizontal grill bars on a black background and has a single brake booster and an under dash 'umbrella' handbrake.
It has travelled approx 80,000 miles.
Ownership History:
The original owner took it home but soon returned to the dealer and exchanged it for a 1750 Berlina.
It was the last Giulia Super sold new in Adelaide
My mother purchased it from the same Alfa dealer.
it was still under the manufacturers warranty and was serviced under the Alfa warranty by Luigi Amori who was head mechanic there at the time.
He is running Italservice in Adelaide now.
In the mid 70's my mothers then husband took it apart and could not work out how to put it back together again.
I bought it, in its partly disassembled state in 1980 or maybe late 79.
It had been off the road for about 4-5 years but fortunately most of the parts were in boxes with the car in a shed behind the house.
I put it back together again and drove it for several years before doing a complete strip down.
It still has the original handbooks in the glove box and is an entirely genuine car with a fully known provenance.
I first sat in this car in 1970 in the dealers showroom on Magill Road Stepney in Adelaide South Australia.
It was parked next to a very nice red Dino Ferrari and they shared the space with a red spider and a 1750 Berlina at the time.
I recall a very bright red fiat 500 as well.
I am a bit vague about it all now but I do recall the day I first saw it.
It was a bit of an Italian motoring moment for me.
Since it left the dealers showroom it has always been very well maintained and it still presents like a six month old car.
Luigi Amori of Italservice Adelaide did the last engine rebuild for me.
Prior to that Lorenzo, Head Mechanic at Alfa Romeo Australia during the Giulia era rebuilt the engine in his repair shop in Alexandria Sydney.
I rebuilt the engine the first time sometime around 1981-2 replacing pistons, liners and bearings and I think a water pump, the full clutch assembly and other assorted work.
That rebuild supported the next approx 45000 miles of it's further history.
At around 80000 miles it was starting to blow a small amount of smoke at times when given some very serious encouragement and when the last body refurb was done I took the opportunity to get the engine rebuilt.
Unfortunately during the run in period on a trip from Sydney to South Australia it ran a (new) bearing for reasons that remain a mystery.
After that very upsetting moment it sat in a shed at the back of my restaurant for over a year and then when I could not stand looking at it sitting there any longer the whole thing was subsequently done again by Luigi Amori in Adelaide.
He drove it to and from his home for a couple of weeks to make sure it was running correctly after refitting the rebuilt engine because I had to go overseas.
Then it went into storage.
It remains there to this day.
I do not want to sell it but I am rarely in Australia and it just sits in storage causing me some degree of heartache.
I am currently in Sydney and have no Photo's available to post at this time.
I am planning to go to Adelaide very soon to make the car available for sale.
If it is not sold beforehand I will post some photos as soon as I have some available.
This is not a potential restoration project it is a second hand Giulia Super in 'as new' condition with a rebuilt engine waiting to be run in by some lucky new owner.
I am undecided about the price at this time.
Anyone interested can contact me directly if they wish and I can give more info or arrange an inspection.
