jiggling key has no effect, there was no mention of dog teeth in the quote for 2000. took it up to Mt Dandenong this week, some of the hills in the backstreets were a task without the ability to go from 3rd to 2nd!! but it was still fun!! does anyone know if there was a smaller tank fitted to the 88 3litre? it seems to not take the suggested 68litres, and i only got about 400km from the tank..?

Does your boot have a hump in it? If so it has the big tank. As far as I know all genuine 3 litres are like that. If your boot is flat then you have a 2.5 litre car with the smaller tank. It may have had a 3 litre engine fitted later. The other possibility is that the fuel gauge is showing empty when there is still about 10 - 20 litres in it. My 1984 GTV does that.

With regards to your ignition switch, fit a relay if it doesn't have one already. Fitting one cured all my problems with the GTV. Fitting a new solenoid, cleaning all earths, fitting a second earth lead on the engine and having the starter serviced all helped but didn't cure the problem. It spins over beautifully every time now. I will fit one on the 75 soon because that occasionally takes 3 or 4 turns to get contact. The ignition switches develop high resistance with age and the relay bypasses it because it gets its power direct from the battery.

And while you are at it, add relays for the headlights as well. If you take a bit of time to situate the relay correctly, you won't need to cut the existing wiring.

its definately a 3litre from june 88. its been in the family since new, has the (75 3.0 6V) all one piece badge with the blue background on the bootlid. speaking of which, ive been trying to get a hold of a new one of these badges, rather than the separate ones, but i cant find them anywhere. can you define a 'hump' in the boot or show a pic? do you mean the tank is sitting in the boot? mine is like that. i know that i can never fill the tank all the way, it never reads full and the most i can ever put in, when the light just comes on, is about 50-55 litres. my main concern is the fuel consumption. theres a really small hole in the exhaust but im getting a new 2.5 inch exhaust put on in a couple of weeks. hopefully just needs a good tune up(which was done in my last service at the mechanic which shall remain nameless, only 2 months ago, along with a poor brake allignment, faulty headlight/indicator switch replaced with a new....faulty indicator switch and leaking new windscreen).....getting frustrated
thanks for all the great info everyone.

if you are going to put a 2.5 inch system on a tired car with bad synchros, that could spell the end for the car

It's definitely a 3 litre then. Those badges are very hard to come by new. I was lucky enough to win one on ebay last year but it cost me over $90. The tanks are hard to fill because they trigger the pump cut off all the time. I read on the BB about turning the nozzle upside down and it works. You can put it in full speed but when it cuts out that's it. If you try and get more in it floods out all over your feet. Mine reads pretty close to full when I do that and it is actually full. I get about 60 litres in when it is showing empty that way. It took a while to get the hang of it.

perhaps 2.25 inch but please explain end of the car? im getting the synchros done too within a month, just got a great deal on an exhaust of my choosing, made and fitted for $250, so it is sorta irresistable. who said the car is tired? never missed a service, only real mechanical problem is the synchros, garaged its whole life, just has a lot of country kms on the clock.

the 3ltr 75 is a most desirable car
a large exhaust implies performance which costs
and can add to the frustration if things go wrong
but if you are going to do the synchros, it wont be tired
i hope you enjoy it and get a good run out of it

Had a simialar starting problem on a 2lt GTV I previously owned during my uni days. It turned out to be the relay on top of the starter motor. Carried a little stick with me to tap the top of the starter moter! Started up fine after that .... bit annoying when it was raining!
