The Pub

Having engaged in a certain amount of largely pointless banter in a thread nominally
titled "Alfas For Sale In Australia" (sorry) and seeing that I'm not alone in drifting off topic, I feel inclined to go to the pub. I should add, that aside from the "real world"
tendency to do just that, the title is borrowed from the jaglovers.org site - though
I suspect that isn't original either.

Anyway, this thread has no topic, feel free to drop in, but no leaving until you have bought a round!

Cheers!

Does anyone know this car? I had the feeling it might be an import . Anyway I was in a hurry otherwise I would have taken a closer look and sought out the owner. It has NSW plates. I have not seen this one before.
I haven't seen it either (and it is not far from me). Maybe just visiting? Was this in the "For sale" thread because you see every alfa parked in public view as a potential "find"?

Darryl, we have been running an Alfa spotting in Australia thread for a quite while now. I haven't used it for ages and no longer subscribe to it, I actually forgot that we have it (its not in the Australian forum anyway) and I simply dropped it in here by mistake. Nothing sinister last thing I need to do is corner the market on Alfa's in QLD. Not every ALFA is a potential find, never been big on 2000's anyway.

Ok, this is an excellent idea for a thread. Pull me a fresh Warsteiner and lets start the ramblings about.. whatever.

Yeah spotting thread is in the Picture Room, but that, like most of our Aussie threads have gone hopelessly off Topic. We spent two whole pages discussing the merits of various Colombo engined Ferraris, other Ferraris and somehow a Lancia Gamma also entered the conversation, none of which we had actually spotted anytime recently, just lusted after.

I now find however, that it is extremely difficult to randomly head a thread in a topical direction when there is nothing to tangent off, making me look rather boring. Alright, here goes.

Iso and de Tomaso...

How much do we count these two as Italian manufacturers? I for one LOVE 1st series Rivoltas and 1st Series Grifos, heck, Bizzarini Stradas too. Pantera... hmm not so keen but the shape said wild before things like Countach and Diablo ever came along.

I reckon an early Rivolta would be wonderful. Italian style, exclusivity, and one of the world's most well known, easily serviceable and upgradeable engines. Not all that expensive either compared to a contemporary Ferrari or prehaps Lambo 400? Hope this stirs some discussion.

That's right now I remember why I left the spotting thread I got bored with all the ferarri stuff. Too much of a good thing and all that.

Actually while we are on Italian cars, I pulled into a Service station in Graceville today and saw a Red Lancia Fulvia coupe sitting there. I appreciate what they are but they are not the most masculine in style. Everything about them looks like it was designed with a women in mind. The dash, the seats, the steering wheel, even the V4 which despite being a technical masterpiece is too ...well ... fussy for my liking.

Now in comparison the 105 coupe has a stance that is pure red blooded male, but with style as well, sort of like an Italian Suit really.

Also today I saw a Bright yellow Lambo, brand new guess it was a Merculado or whatever (sorry Miura was original and best ) roaring up Ipswich Rd. Nice note though.

Also found this photo of the most unusual Fiat X19 that I have ever seen, check it out. What is it that Andy says in Little Britain... oh yes "MONSTER TRUCKS"

I noticed your new sig straight away Pete, It's great. Maybe you can write your thesis on that!

The Americans I guess built good (cheap) powerful motors, but they could never build an ISO or a Pantera!

Well, they could never style an ISO or Pantera.

Phil - I agree that perhaps the Fulvia Coupe is not so masculine, but gee they are pretty, especially S1 & S2 cars. Not only that but they're supposed to handle like nothing else before or since. Of all the cars on my extensive wishlist, a Fulvia is at Numero Uno, and as soon as funds and vehicle availibility allow I will buy one. There's something about Lancia, much more so than Alfa that is truly special. You drive an Alfa, it's nice, it's sporting - Cuore Sportivo and all that crap..

But a Lancia.. that is truly something special. I dont mean a crusty old Beta or any of those horrid 90s or 00s contraptions but cars like the pacesetting Lambda, Aurelia, Aprilla, Flavia, Fulvia... truly Lancia is one of the greatest marques the world has ever seen - and I dont think Im romanticising that, because the engineering is plainly there to back it up. Too bad they just couldn't make money. The problem continues today obviously, which is why people buy Hyundais instead of Fiat Puntos, which look 100 times better and are just that bit more special. I have learnt recently that at the end of the day, everyone is a tight cheaparse.

I will own a pre-Fiat Lancia one day, that is a promise. (to myself )

I know Ben will agree me when he finally shows up to The Pub for a beer.

So what;s girlie about that?

I wish there were as many Zagato bodied Alfa's as there were Zagato bodied Lancia's came to Aust. I'd be looking for one of those Pete.

Iso and de Tomaso...

Excellent choice - I agree 100% re the Iso's - really wanted to buy a GT a few years back. The later Lele's were a bit heavy looking in the tail, but I love the look of the dash and interior in general. The less said about the ford engined Grifos the better (makes the GTV6 bonnet look quite nice!) but the earlier ones look nice in pics (never seen one in the flesh).

I am a much bigger fan of the Pantera than you seem to be - the car has the muscle to back up the look - and the early ones aren't so ott (no flares and wings) and are really quite svelt.

But getting back to the real italians (some here seem to think there is no joy to be had from cast iron pushrod V8s), you mention Lambo 400? Don't you mean Ferrari? Way too scary running costs wide for me. Lambo Espada is an interesting if only as the cheapest way to get that engine to listen to. Of course, coming from a tractor mfg, and given my bevan/bogan credentials maybe I should go for an LM instead

Would love to see the reaction of both the X5 and "real" 4WD crowd to one of those, and the potential to extract more(!) power is enormous.
