Stolen - Aston Martin DB4 GT
Someone stole an Aston Martin DB4 GT in Melbourne this week. There couldn't be more than a couple of them in Australia, so be on the lookout people!
I feel for the guy who owns it. How do you replace a car like that?

This is a bad segway, but where else will I get to bring a story about Aston Martin into the BB.
I once read a funny story about Aston Martin in the late 50's early 60's. As you probably know, the DB stands for David Brown, like Lamborghini, David Brown was a tractor manufacturer who wanted to get into Sports cars, where Lamborghini started his own, David Brown bought a pre-existing concern, Aston Martin. Well after a couple of years David Brown Ltd began to relise that Aston Martin was not profitable, and the tractors were propping up the sportscar business, in fact they were making a loss on every Aston sold. Anyway one day a chap walked into Aston Martin's show rooms in Berkley Square (I think ? Maybe it was Park Lane, I forget ) and walked up to a sales man and inquired about the latest DB4.
The salesman said " This model is 4000 pounds sir."
"Well I am a close personel friend of David Brown, I would like it a cost." replied the chap.
To which the Salesman replied "Very well sir, that will be 5000 pounds please."

One has to wonder about the motivation for stealing such a rare car - like what exactly what you do with it? Take off shore, but someone is still going to notice one day when the chassis number turns up.
Its probably some serial car theif who will squirrel it away FOREVER and it will fade away and become part of Aston folklore...
Seriously, what do people do when they steal artworks, rare cars etc?

Well you are closer than you think to the truth, most artworks/antiques that are famous/expensive get squirrled away forever. Apparently a lot of stolen art/antiques leave the country in Diplomatic pouches.
Cars, well in the UK a lot of sports cars were beinmg nicked for the Russian market. In HK and Japan sports cars wind up in the PRC.

That car was stolen about 5 minutes walk from me, and about 30 seconds drive, and yeah, it's middle-upper leafy burbs as well. Bit scary to feel that people do stuff like that, and a bit hard to understand the motive. I hope he gets it back in the same state it was taken.
The other thing is, old cars arent always easy to drive... My dad struggles to drive my Berlina smoothly, I can just imagine the damage someone could do to an old car they arent familar with... Im thinking burnt clutches, crunched gears and no accounting for stopping distances.
Anyway. sad times.

I tend to think that anyone who has the motivation or reason to pinch something like a DB4GT would have driven cars of similar ilk before. That's just a theory ofcourse, it could have been a opportunist - but I think its unlikely.
I'm with you though Pete, I hope it gets back to where its meant to be.
