Smile Carpet sets for Alfetta GT/GT's

I was wondering if anyone has purchased carpet sets from "Australian Classics" in Victoria and whether the quality is any good?

There website is www.ausclassics.com.au . They are advertising on Ebay (Item number: 290063074452) a full carpet set for Alfetta GT/GTV's for $165 buy it now. Is this a reasonable price to pay for molded carpets or am I better off getting a local trimmer to do it?

Ive got a 76 sedan and when I restored it several years ago I went to a trimmer and got him to order it and install as they can be a real pain to do, for around couple of hundred, that way you can choose the type of carpet style as I got the closed loop type,it came in three sections and fit good that way you know what your getting. The price does sound good just depends how you want to go about it. Read the feed back and see how the quality is

Thanks for your comments Alfettamad.

Is the loop pile the standard type of carpet for these cars or the plush style?

I'm currently in the obtain parts and info stage for the restoration of my Alfetta GT so any advise is appreciated.

Marks Alfetta (Mark ?),

The coupe carpet is originally a single piece of vacuum-formed, plastic-backed carpet. Years ago, a few of the regular molded carpet suppliers also did one-piece sets for Alfettas. It might pay to go through something like Just Cars magazine or Street Machine and phone the carpet advertisers. They may still have the mold, or even sets on the shelf.

A single piece carpet is pretty easy to fit into an Alfetta. Just need to pull the seats, console and stainless sill trims.

While you are at it I strongly recommend you replace the underlay with quality stuff. I re-did my first coupe and extended the underlay (soundproofing) well up the firewall under the dash, and I also stuck it onto the rear bulkhead and floor under the seat. It really reduces road noise.

Another tip is to glue the floor bungs in place after you have removed all the rust and treated/painted the floor.

Beatle bayly thanks for your comments just one question though, is the purpose of glueing the bungs back into the floor pan to stop moisture getting in between the carpet and the floor pan?

Yep !

The two bungs toward the front of the floor are particularly susceptible from water spraying off wider front tyres. The factory carpet is plastic backed, and the factory underlay is tar-backed, which means you could have quite a lot of water sitting on the floor without it soaking through to the top layer and becoming visible.

Another tip with new carpets/underlay is to leave the carpet rather loose. Otherwise, as the new underlay compresses, your carpet will look like it has shrunk and sit up off the floor.

Moulded carpet

I bought a moulded carpet from a western sydney supplier a few years ago for an alfetta GTV. Mostly I was happy with it, but I made the mistake of getting plush nylon carpet rather than loop pile.

The plush carpet as it was supplied had a tendency to shed. It was always covered in clumps of carpet pile. Loop looks neater and doesn't clump.

Other than a poor choice of carpet (mine), the fit was acceptable. Only, I can't remember the name of the place that sold it to me

Hmmmm i cant really recommend ausclassics carpets at this stage. I ordered mine almost 2 months ago and i still havent seen it!!!!

This guy likes to blame everyone but himself... read the feedback comments and you will see a pattern forming, he doesnt like to answer emails either. Im still waiting, im only patient because the car is about a week away from paint. Ill wait another week then ill report it to ebay if it hasnt shown up. Grrrrr

If it turns up ill let you know what the quality is like.
