Bathurst 1984

Does anyone have any info on that very fast yellow Alfa GTV6 that nearly drove past the winning Walkinshaw Jaguar XJS down the conrod straight that year?----Cheers Dave Hood

Was the Jaguar stationary or something?

It was probably one of the Luigi Ignis GTV6s, one of which still survives and is in active competition but I dont know the passing maneouvre you refer to!

There is also a Colin Bond, but I'm not sure what year (s) that ran.

I'm prety sure the Ignis GTV6 is the ex Colin Bond car. It is now owned by Hugh Harrison of Monza Motors, Melbourne. I think I read on the GTV6 forum it's now running a 3.3?L 12V, with 10mm spark plugs to allow for enormous valves. The motor was built up by PACE Engineering also in Melbourne.

Cheers, Scott

Great clip! Those were the days when Bathurst was actually interesting. It's just so boring now that I can't bring myself to watch it.

I feel exactly the same about both. Speed cameras are a crock of s*** that don't reduce the roadtoll at all but only fill government coffers. I got my P's a few months ago and the things I had to do to pass were ridiculous. 5km/h under the posted limit at all times, 30km/h through chicanes, roundabouts and anything but a straight road. They're taking the common sense and fun out of driving by over regulating it. And in the end, the speed cameras have been proven to INCREASE the road toll!!

Yeah and as for Bathurst and the whole V8 supercar series, it's so boring. 2 makes and never more than 4 different shapes. I'm too young to remember the way it used to be but I wish it was like that again. Sierras, Skylines, Supras, Alfas, BMWs, Volvos the list goes on. Who cares if you couldn't buy half the models locally, it's television, it should be entertaining.

Sorry about the rant.
Scott

I agree with everything you just said; however,
Promoting slow driving through corners, obstacles etc is good because I think most people are too stupid to know what they're doing if they get into trouble.
Advanced driving courses should be compulsory. There should be more awareness for motorcyclists and many other things that contribute to deaths other than speeding.

Last year after I picked up the 1750 in Melbourne, I drove around the Bathurst circuit. I have never been so amazed! The downhill section (esses, I think) after Skyline, is absolutely stunning, and frightening. At legal speed its something that you take with caution which only makes watching it on telly or looking at photos of V8s traversing it, just amazing.

Hey Scott, your rant is justified because I think you're abdolutely right. Driver's are being tested in the most pathetic ways, then everybody scratches the head, wondering why there are road accidents in bad weather. And good weather for that matter.

Government loves blaming P-platers too. Okay, the news everynight seems to justify that as do the stats. But try driving around Ballina for a day, and see how many times a geriatric in a Toyota/Honda/Nissan tries to kill you by totally ignoring everything except what's immediately in front of them.

I agree with speed limits in towns and built-up areas. I think however that speed limits on highways should be higher. putting red light cameras every 10 metres doesn't reduce casualties at all. It makes people more nervous and distracted.
Anyway, I hate getting worked up about it. It's not gonna change so we'd better get used to it.

I lived out the last six months of the 'good old days' in Canberra when there were no cameras! And its a bloody GREAT place to drive when there are no cameras.

I think Canberra is the best 'driver's' town in Australia. Super smooth roads, not much traffic, roundabouts galore. Lot's of dik heads though.
