Help With 84 Giulietta.. Adelaide.. PLEASE
I have just bought a new Giulietta and every time I drive it and give it a bit it smells like clutch but when I give my old giulietta a bit the car never smells or nothing and the clutch in the old giulietta grabs straight away and the new one grabs mostly when the clutch is all the way out.
Just want to know if anyone out there would be able to swap over the clutches out of both cars and maybe even the tail shafts for some cash. As I don’t have the tools as I am not living at home no more and all of the knowledge to do so.
Also with my new giulietta when it gets to 4-5 thousand revs the car shakes and it vibrates through the gear knob. I’m not sure if it’s the exhaust, engine mounts or the tail shaft. The exhaust looks all clear, the engine mounts look ok so I might think it’s the tail shaft? Would any one know?
Much thanks Chris

The shake sounds like it might be an imbalance in the shaft. You'd also want to check the transmission mounts. I have never done that job unfortunately so I wouldn't be of much help to you, and all my tools are in storage. I think you might need to take it to a reputable mechanic to get it sorted?

just took it for a spin clutch still stinks. and changed over clutch and brake boosters and master cylinders.
to change the clutch do i have to drop the while gearbox? or can i just take the tailshaft off and drop the front end of the transaxel/gearbox then change it like that ?

Based on my previous experience with 116 (Alfetta) based Alfa's, generally if you need to change the clutch, then yes not only do you need to drop the tailshaft but as well the gearbox off the rear transaxle. Its a bit of a pain in the arse job. If you have clutch odour then it certainly sounds like it maybe slipping for some reason.
The shudder issue does very much sound like your tailshaft is out of balance and this is actually quite critical on 116 Alfas. I would also check the condition of the guibo (rubber dohnut) and also your engine mounts, since you mention that the engine was shaking quite a lot. If the guibo is in poor condition, change it since this can be very dangerous if it fails. Early warning signs, apart from cracking of the rubber are a metallic tinging type of sound. Engine mounts also fail with age and both of these also could contribute to the problems mentioned. Goodluck and hope you get it sorted.
Hey Lunchcutter, good to see another Hobart BB member online. Dave

thanks for the info guys.
im just going to change the tail shaft with the other one on my other giulietta drop the front of the gearbox/clutch then also change the clutch and slave cylinders off the other giulietta.
also i got old the clutch in the one that smells might be the original clutch or an old one and the other giulietta must be newer with newer compound. would this be true ?
im going to be starting this after the weekend so will let every one know how i go.
thanks again all

Hi Mathew
I had wondered if there might be a few more of us here in Tassie. There is also Ducatibruce, who is based at Cygnet. I caught up with him and his partner before Christmas to check out his 2L 105 GTV that he had recently had restored. In case you are not aware, there is a local Italian car club (Club Motori Italia) based here in Hobart that has a pretty active calander of events, including both social and motorsport based. Send me a PM if you would like more details on this, or alternatively Google it. I know Buzzed and am familiar with his interesting project.
Sorry Chris for going off track on your thread for a moment. I would say from what you describe and propose that hopefully you should be able to resolve all your issues with the Giulietta. Will be interested to see how that goes. Dave

Are you positive it's actually the clutch making the smell??? Could be a sticking brake caliper.
